k planes for 292

Decided on keeping my 06 292. want ti install larger trim tabs. There are the mercury 280s and 380s or the latham marine tabs which are 30"l x14" w. My quwstion is which ones will make the boat perform better in rough water. Has anyone put larger tabs on a 292 and how did it perform.

jdub 10-04-2008 11:45 PM

I would think the 280 would be plenty. Does the 292 not handle the rough water good? What are you trying to correct?

t500hps 10-05-2008 06:26 AM

I have 280's on my 382. I don't feel I need the 380's, you definitely don't. I seem to remember a local guy was able to buy a larger Bennett plate to use with his existing bennett tabs and claimed that helped alot. (I'd look into that before spending that much on K-planes)

I have 380's on our 382 and love them but of corse we don't run in the river as much as you do . :eeg:

I went with 280s K-Planes and it is major improvement over the stock Bennett's. Here is a thread on the subject:

4MULA > ARE YOU THE ONE WHO GAVE ME THE INFO ON THE 292 FILLER CUSHION

jwheels629 10-06-2008 06:21 PM

quicker out of the hole and much more reactive and stable both in rough water and top end speed

Ditto to jwheels. More responsive and less 'flighty' if that's a word...? Plus they move much quicker than the slooowww Bennetts which is an advantage when running hard and you need to make quick adjustments.

That would be me...please tell me you got your filler cushion! For some reason, I am STILL waiting for mine and lets just say I am not too happy about it! i have missed some great sleeping weather waiting for this thing!

jdub 10-12-2008 09:51 AM

So how does 292 handle the rough? I see a couple of the F1 single engines around and I like them. Just never seen one run. What's to be expected from the ride?

Very well! The F1 single big block won the national championship, so that says something about the hull design. The 292's available to the general public are only available with twin small blocks. Mine has twin 6.2's. It is a bit tail heavy, but the upgrade to K-Planes helped a lot. It has a 24° deadrise V, twin steps, and is heavy (7500 lbs dry). This is a great combination for rough water handling and speed. The most HP you can get stock is 640 (twin 320). The hull can probably handle twice that!:evilb:

I know this is an old thread...but what filler cushion are you referring to? Is there something for the floor between the couches? That would be great!?!?
