Bad Fuel Guage on 2000 382
 

Always reads below empty, with the Low Fuel Warning light on.
Worked intermittently for a while, but sometimes "crashed" when I pushed the trim buttons.
Then stopped working all together.
Dealer told me to see what happened when I shorted out the sender at the tank. The guage jumped to "full." Said I had a bad sender, but good guage.
Replaced the in-tank sender with a new one from the factory: same deal. Reads nothing.

Any similar experiences?
Any ideas?

Is it possible that you have water it the bottom of your tank. That
will send a false signal to the gage. You can check the web site centriodproducts.com for more information on the sending unit.

I have the same problem with my 2001 382, including the weird reaction to the trim tab switches, apparently due to the voltage spike that goes through the electical system. Formula replaced the sending unit and the gauge to no avail, so we were beginning to suspect the wiring, but that seems unlikely once you see how well it is done. It now appears that the design of the sending unit itself is not the greatest.

BoilerDaddy - jump in here. I heard from your racing program "test man" in south Florida that you guys are going to try testing a different sending unit to deal with this???

Dunno, Chuck--I haven't heard anything, but you may be right. I know the guys in TAG monitor the board, so maybe they can tell me something.

Did you get it fixed?

I'm thinking of taking my boat to the Formula dealer and letting them work on it, but it would sure be allot easier if I could do something myself.

Daryl in TAG talks like there may be something in the works that will solve the problems, but I would not call it definite at this time. When it is definite, I'll let you know.

Check the ground to you tank guys. If you ground the sender wire and the needle jumps then this tells me that you either:

A: have a bad sender

B have a bad ground to the tank or to the ender if it is a "floating sender" Try grounding in different locations and see if the needles jumps to life.
