Drive centerlines measurement 311
 

Can anyone measure the drives on their 311. I am looking for the measurement from center to center for a tie bar I need. Of course I gave my old one to a friend saying I will never need this, yours is junk take it......:rolleyes::rolleyes:

There was some discussion about not using a tie bar on a 311 because they have an internal tie bar. If you raise the outdrives even slightly out of sync it binds the gimbal rings - any truth?

Bob .... you need to remove the internal bar ...Or let me say I removed mine ...if you inspect the internal bar there is not much to it ....m

Never noticed one on mine. Boat came with the external bar from the previous owner. Maybe he took the internal bar off.
This is first I've ever heard of internal tie bars. Why would this apply only to 311s? And, if it applies to other boats with twins, I think we'd have heard about it by now.

Sounds kind of not real to me.

An internal tie bar set up was very common at one point in time. It would be connected to the steering arm that comes thru the upper area of the transom assembly, same place a cable steering system would hook up. My 88 32 Pachanga had this, I did add the external tie bar to that boat but left the internal bar in place as well with no problems. Internal bars are still used today on lower performance boats such as family cruisers with twins. The real advantage to the external bar is that they are beefier. If you run 60 + you should be external tie bar and full hydraulic steering by todays standards.

Would be best to measure your boat as the center to center can vary somewhat. Most all external bars are adjustable to some degree, but measure your own to be sure.
