242 SS value

I found an abandoned '87 242 ss that has been claimed by the boat yard. I'm going in next week to try and get this thing on the cheap. It failed at the auction to get $5000.00. The boat is in pretty rough shape, needs all the seats and sunpad replaced and a major buff on the hull. From what I can see the boat structurally is good, it just needs some serious TLC. This has the 350 Mag (shows 305 hrs) and Alpha drive and no trailer. What do you guys think this thing is worth? Its been sitting since 2002.

Aside from the major problems, a 242 SS or LS with a 350 is underpowered. You'll put all this time, effort, and cash into it and still have an underpowered boat that won't bring nearly as much as big block 242. Plus, even though I like the SS layout (tons of room, I've owned two, 223 & 242), not many people go for the "family" orientation of that model. No trailer is a pretty costly setback too.

This is only my opinion but, I would only plow that kind of work into a special boat, like a 242SR1 with twin 350's. Now those are cool little boats that are worth the effort.

my brother has a 242 with a 540 with 15 hrs on it that is clean and would take $8500....he bought it from Magic Float on this board...

T-bird.

I agree that the boat is underpowered and I really don't like back to back seats... However, seeing that the interior needs to be replaced I was thinking about adding bolsters.. I can get a new pair of them on ebay for $1300.00. The engine I would rebuild and turn into a 425 hp 383 stroker. Any opinions on that? Again, the yard needs to come way down in price, but I think they will. They want this thing gone! I'm just trying to figure out what is a deal and when I should walk.

425 would be nice power for this boat. I don't think I would channel it through an Alpha though.

I've read a lot of posts that guys have pushed this much power through an Alpha for years with no problems. However, they all said you cannot hammer it out of the hole, i guess that is where the alpha will fail. A BB with a Bravo would be better, but if the price is right this will work... I'm just curious what you all think that price would be?

The boat won't even be worth the money you spend on the motor, seats, etc... They are only worth what someone will pay you for it. If you love it and want to sink money into it, then that's an option. For a point of reference, I just sold the nicest 242LS I've ever seen with trailer, good stereo, 615HP custom motor, Bravo X/Imco XR drive, and other goodies for $13,000. It's a tough market on boats that old that take huge HP to generate modest speeds.

Just my 2 cents.
