292 fastech
thinking of buying a 292 fastech. would like some feedback on different engine packages.i am seeing 377's,350's. did they ever make that boat with a single,500,525, or575sci .also would like to know how good they are to ski behind? top speed? 292 vs. 272?
|
Some of the other guys can keep me honest here but here's what I have gatherd.
1999/2000-2001: few (not sure how many) single engine models made with race setup and no cabin. Were oringinally setup either hp500's or innovative 496 motors from what I can tell because of the engine restriction in that class of racing. ***nice one for sale in st. louis right now with pleasure cockpit setup 2001-2004: you could get twins in 350 mags, 6.2l 320hp 377's, or 377 Scorpion Merc Racing motors 2004-Current 350mags and 6.2's are your only options I believek Approx Top speeds: 350mags--68-70mph 6.2's: 70-72mph 377's: 78-80mph 292 fastech is a LOT faster than the older 272's with the same power. In fact you need about 550hp a side in the old 272's to be on par with the Scorpion 292 I believe. To put it into perspective a 272 with 350 mags (260hp version from back in the day) runs 58-59mph. |

I have a '06 292 with 6.2's running 28 pitch labbed Bravo 4-blades. Top speed range is 69-71mph. I find the slowest cruise speed with my props is around 37 mph. Any slower and you need a lot of tab to keep it from falling off plane and running very inefficient mileage wise. It is pretty efficient in the good cruising range of 40-50 mph at 1.8-2.0 mpg (I have SmartCraft - SC5000). In perfect conditions I have seen 2.2 mpg. The boat holds 113 gallons of gas, so a decent cruise range is possible. I had the Bennett tabs replaced with Mercury 280S K-planes. MUCH better rough water handling when hanging it out and it will plane out faster. The K-planes along with Latham hydraulic steering makes it a dream to drive! This boat is not good to ski or tube behind. I have pulled my daughter tubing with the K-planes burried and trying to keep it under 30 mph, but it is a struggle. Plus no ski pylon, so the rope is low to the water and will splash the riders in the face. Other than the skiiing the 292 a great all around boat. Small enough to tow easily and handle solo on the water if needed, but big enough to tame most water on inland lakes and rivers. VERY comfortable interior and high quality construction. We got the full bimini and enclosure. Spend many nights sleeping in it during the season. Great boat for long cruises and can get the adrenaline flowing running 70 mph in the rough. As for upgrades... a few years down the road when more engine builders in the marine industry start offering reliable, high HP LS small block engine packages that don't cost and arm and a leg, I see a lot of potential! You should be able to find some great deals out there. Good luck! Dave |
thanks guys ,that information was very helpful.

what is the difference between a 6.2l and the scorpion 377?
|
Quite a bit the 377 Scorpions are rare. They were a very costly upgrade,Nice HP upgrade; But back to water sports pulling capability; the 292's are not made for that and are VERY SLOW out of the hole, but they do ride nice when up and running.

http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o30646-en.html Open to offers and I'm also selling to make a move up...........been looking at 400SS's, Donzi 39 ZSC's, and recently been contemplating 419's as something maybe the wife could live with and also still satisfy my need for speed? All the 292 info posted is right on from my experience. Mine has 320HP 6.2's. , 28" 4 blades stock from Merc. I've seen 69-70 top speed and good cruising speed is between 40 and 50. It doesn't like to stay on plane much below mid 30's. Somewhat slow getting onto plane............I flipped the "celery sticks" around to tuck the drives further under and it's better but it still feels like it struggles a bit compared to other boats I've been on. Fun boat to drive, good quality, great looks. We boat on a large bay and it's well suited for that. Can't imagine trying to ski behind it, don't think that would work out well. Thanks, Pat |
