Default Mid 1980's Guage replacement.

Well I have noticed my oil pressure reading is wrong. I have checked it with a "wet guage" I don't know if it's the guage or the sender. Bought a new sender so if it solves the problem this post is probally for nothing. BUT since I need to replace my tach if the oil gauge is bad also I will probally just replace the whole set....Question is this I know that the dash panel is held by screws along the edge. When I replaced the in-dash hourmeter with a depth guage it was a pain to get at from under the dash. If I remember I tried to remove the dash as a unit but the wires going to the guages had only about a inch or so of play. Not enough to undo them from up top. I had to go from under the dash to un-hook the wires and hook them back up....Is there an easier way to change all the guages or do I need to un-hook them all from under the dash first then pull them out with the dash? MFB 357 didn't you say you had a whole set of Medalion guages like mine? And that you replaced them with Gaffrig's or something? How did you go about your install?

I've replaced all the gauges and sending units in my 1986 206LS(still for sale, see the classifieds) which I believe has the same dash as your's. I had to cut a few wire ties and the whole unit came out for access. Once there, I swapped out the medallion gouges with Gaffrig. I still have the whole old set which most of them worked. E-mail me if you are interested. Or you might want to try something like this:

Hey F3LS,

I just got a nice quote from a guy through here, (OSO) that had a new panel, gauges, and all pigtails pre-wired right to the motor for my "84" F3LS, with connectors for a reasonable price. The name is Mear Image. They were Faria gauges however, not Gaffrig.

Hey F3LS! What throttle control is that on your set-up. I want to switch out my stock Quicksilver and was not sure who's set-up I could put in.

Nice Dash.

Thanks all,

txboater, That is a Gaffrig throttle control. A little on the pricey side, but well worth it. I replaced my Quicksilver set-up with it. Watch out for the trim that goes around the Gaffrig, it was around $90 JUST for the trim piece! There was a slight modification to the fiberglass under where the shifter goes, but not more than that! Oh yea, I replaced all of the cables front to back. Makes for a smoooth control!

Thumbs up Dash plate

AXA

That is a nice looking dash. Did you use the oem dash panel or make a new one. Are the graphics on the panel paint or did you have a decal made.
It's a nice updated look.

Bad Abit, Yes I did a major refit. First throw away your old wiring harnesses. replace with new merc ones cost around $150. each plus couple hours labor, figure what gauges you have room for, I moved hour meters down below dash to free up space. then template out old cut out, make up a new layout using gauges you want then mail it to me. tell me what you want it cut out of. I'll make you two of them. I used Black Plexi. Be sure if you plan on using trim rings you allow for extra spacing between them.I'd be glad to give you any pointers I can. Heres pic of mine. Good Luck,Mark B....(This boat is for sale at Oceanperformance in saybrook CT.

RUSS SR1, We used the old dash panel for the basic shape and then laid out the gauges (mfb357 is right, leave extra space if you are going to use bezels). The checkerboard pattern is laser etched from behind and then filled with white. This leaves a smooth finish on the face. The holes were cut with a laser also! I have a name and number for the guy who did the work for me if you want. I just had the dash in my 1993 303SR1 redone as well, but it was originally aluminum with blind studs to mount the gauges (factory VDO). I had that power coated and am going to have the graphics lasered into it as well. Had to redesign the layout so the GPS/chartplotter would fit. Removed the speedo to make room.
