Bought a 382!!!!

Well ive been lurking around here asking questions for a couple months. Today i took the plunge, it was one of those right time right place deals.

1995 382, the boat has under 400 hours on it. It has 500hp's in it that are at 30 hours.

The boat was left out of the water for the last 2 years with no cover on it. It needs some seat work and some interior work (headliner came down).

Its gonna be a good winter project.
Here are a couple pics, more pics to come.

Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats on the sickness call perfomance boating!!

Big Boys Toys 09-22-2010 04:02 AM

Good luck with the new ride.
That bad boy should ride real sweet in the big water.

ThirdBird 09-22-2010 06:01 AM

Nice. Never saw that particular paint sceme before. Is it original? Kind of unique if it is original.

J.B. Marshall 09-22-2010 08:44 AM

Very nice, Congratulations. Show us more pics of current condition so we have reference with your winter project improvements, keep us posted and good luck with her.

That boat belonged to a friend of mine for a few years before he sold it through the old Offshore Performance. They are also who did the refresh on the motors. Then the next guy put it up with Mears a year later. What did you finally pay for it, if you don't mind me asking? They had the price way too high for quite a while but I saw it come down recently, I had been thinking about giving Mears a call to see what the real number was on it. I know it needs some work but that is a good boat. That is factory striping on it also.

SlowPlay 09-22-2010 09:27 AM

yeah i will get some more pics of it later this week, it got dark on me quick last night. I have already cleaned off the first layer of funk, but i have a WAYS to go!

Sitting for as long as it has with no cover has put a hurtn on it tho.

My plan was to buy something this winter more like january, but this just happened to work out for the right price.

Ted can you pm me whatever you know about the history of the boat i am trying to piece it all together.

BONDO10 09-22-2010 03:38 PM

Congrats!!!!You will love the 382.Iknow I do:drink:

Saw that one in the Boat trader...nice asking price. Didn't think it would sit long.
500's or 502efi's?

427 larry 09-23-2010 03:32 PM

Those, are factory graphics, called "Refraction".

its been sitting for sale for 2 years.

its 500's

Back4More 09-23-2010 05:50 PM

for 2 years at $39K?

SlowPlay 09-23-2010 11:06 PM

no it started in the hi 60's..... it was listed at 50 when i first saw it.

all i can say is that i didnt pay much for it. :party-smiley-004:

Got batteries in it tonight and started testing systems.

Im not sure if i have a problem with the bilge systems or not. the light on the dash is lit all the time.if you flip it on nothing seems to happen. the hatch actuator doesnt work, that is a huge pain in the rear! Most of the 12V systems came up, the OG tape deck doesnt work... and to think i was gonna go pull out my old tapes hehehehe. Surprisingly the seat motors still work, i think i have a bad switch on the port side for the foot rests, but the stbd side works.

It may get put in the water this weekend to check a few more systems, but thats not set in stone yet. I would like to test as much as we can before it gets dry dock'd.

Oh and moving it last night i had a tire fall off heheehh i guess i burned out the bearings bringing it home. Im just glad i fell off in my dads driveway and not going 60 down the highway. The trailer is HURT! fenders are falling apart, no safety hook up front. no safety straps, brakes are shot, hubs are shot. Its going to cost a few thousand just to get the trailer through DMV.

more updates to come! Next time with pics i hope!

Cool, not too many around evidently. I have never seen one.

scottc 09-24-2010 07:38 AM

If you can do the work on the trailer yourself, convert it to disc brakes with the electric over hydrolic system. If you are not going to do alot of trailering just do what is needed to make it road worthy. I recomend a full check over at least once a year as in pulling the wheels and check everything. LED Lights are also a big plus as they hold up far better than regular bulbs. That trailer is a steel trailer so pay close attention to the frame. If you cannot do the work yourself, it maybe time to look into a replacement trailer. But check it out before you buy.

It always looked to me like they were doing a throwback kind of thing to the older "hockey stick" graphics. The guy that used to own that boat was an M&M fanatic. He actually contacted them and got permission to have the whole boat painted in M&M graphics, but his life plans changed and he sold the boat before he re-painted it. Just think how cheap it would have sold for if it had M&Ms painted all over it :drink::drink:

scottc 09-24-2010 07:53 AM

As with any new boat or trailer....................check everything out before you go out.....................

Back4More 09-24-2010 08:09 AM

Yes I agree, check everything. I would drain and refil the motors and drives also. Plugs, rotors, caps and wires. Make sure all the important stuff is wroking well... then happy winter tinkering.

I have been a big 4wheel drive guy for the last 10 years or so building jeeps from the ground up, i dont mind the work. Pretty much why i bought this was to have a winter project and get out of the 4wheel drive stuff. Just trading once sickness for another.

DoczDock 09-25-2010 03:41 PM

Congratulations! I think I looked at that same boat about 6 or 7 years ago but I think it was in NJ. Those are very rare graphics but I really liked them. Also you don't see many trailers that color. I ended up getting an older 357 SR1 that was in great shape and a little more in my price range at the time. However I have since upgraded to a '97 382 which I love. These are great boats. The only difference between yours and mine is the stepped hull and a few cosmetic things. My 382 had a solid hull and drivetrain (500 HP's/Bravo's) but interior needed TLC (was not well taken care of) but the price was right and I figured I could take care of the all the cabin/cockpit stuff myself. There were a lot of things that didn't work but they all do now (just found the horn - it's an air horn, you won't believe where it is located). I also replaced the dash/gauges, had the throttles and trim gauge bezel chromed, and added a new steering wheel (blinged it up a little bit). Anyway, those things aren't that tough to fix/upgrade and you will find a lot of help on this thread. If you have a question on how something works or how to get at it, throw a question on the forum and you will start to get answers before the day is out. Everyone is very helpful. Good luck keep us posted....

Well we got her in the water!
Big list of goods and bads!

The biggest issue right now is fuel!!!!!!!

Took it out friday evening, it had probably around 80-90 gallons of 2+ year old fuel plus some fuel stablizer i dumped in it. We Couldnt get much over 3k without it breaking up, and she wouldnt sync up for anything! All in all good first run.

Sat. i put 110 gallons in it we did some more work and took it out again. This time breaking up even worse. Got her back do the dock and pulled down the water separators. Found alot of junk in there but no water..... at that point it was dark so we called it a day.

Sunday I got into the carbs a bit and pulled the filters out of the primary and secondaries and put new water sep's on. Then i dumped enough octane boost to treat about 150 gallons in. All the sudden she is a different boat!!!!!

Ran her out for a couple hours, did some idle'n then ran her up and back down. This time she ran GREAT until you got over 4k rpm. now i think we just need to burn out some fuel and get some hi test and we should be good.

Other then that we need to do a pair of thermostats cause they are stickn, were going to do the impellers just to be safe too.

As far as speed the best i could do with the gas was 53mph on the GPS. She really settles into a cruise at about 3400 doing 41mph. Thats with 4 guys and a full tank runnin into the wind.

The funny thing is most of the systems are working, we even got the AC to fire right up that surprised the hela outa me!

If things go well we may try to run over to the solomans island race this weekend. We were going to try and get there for the boat docking comp, but with the fuel issues i didnt want to risk it.

so some pics.....

fresh in the water!

we were runnin 45 i think here. the dog was not liking the cool wind.

ninetym 09-27-2010 04:03 PM

are u burning 93 octane. It makes a huge difference in mine. I also have the same graphics on my 419. Good luck with everything.

SlowPlay 09-27-2010 05:01 PM

all they had at the dock was 87.... so 80 gallons of old fuel 110 gallons of 87 and 150 gallon treatment of octane boost...... Probably no where NEAR where i need to be just yet! hehehe:lolhit:

Big Boys Toys 09-27-2010 05:26 PM

So the bad boy is running better every time you take it out.
Dump the fuel filters again in a clear glass container.
Run the boat again, run it hard, todays fuel sucks, you need to clear out your system completly, todays fuel evaporates and causes several problems with older fuel systems, AND has no staying power. Glad to hear each time out everything seems to be getting better. HOWS THE RIDE?????? IT MUST REALLY RIDE NICELY.
ENJOY WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK WITH IT.

Big Boys Toys 09-27-2010 05:28 PM

By the way the damn dog looks like he is really enjoying the ride !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!:

Flyin-Bryan 09-27-2010 06:52 PM

You need to put a life preserver on the dog.............:drink:

SlowPlay 09-28-2010 08:22 AM

Thanks for the info guys.

The dog does have a lifejacket, but he was spending most of the trip sleeping in the cabin i didnt put it on him.

Hopefully more octane boost will help and burning some fuel down too!

on a side note, its not a rush but im going to need a swim ladder, any ideas where to get a replacement?

J.B. Marshall 09-28-2010 08:44 AM

I hope your sitting down when you hear the cost... from what I remember.... OUCH! There was a thread on it.

RT930turbo 09-28-2010 09:16 AM

Glad to hear it's running better everytime! Loos like you have a very cool winter project, good luck and keep us posted on the progress!

smcser 09-28-2010 09:35 AM

Sounds like she is comming together real good. Nothing like a big Formula..................

Big Boys Toys 09-28-2010 09:51 AM

The formula dealer should be able to set you up with the original ladder that went on the swim platform.
If not West Marine does have a couple of all stainless steel ladders available a short one and a long one. You mount a stainless steel clip on the platform and it slides into it. You can remove it easily. There are also several different designs availble. If it was me I would try to keep the boat as stock as possible.
Enjoy!
