Formula 303 sr1

I'm considering to buy a 1992 Formula 303 sr1 . I'm from Italy and the boat is located in France. I want to ask to you if the boat has a Wc and what do you think about this model....is there something that I have to check in detail on this boat?
Thanks!

Here's a link to a ton of info on my boat...

http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/f...-pictures.html

I love it, great size, easy and inexpensive to operate, and the quality is excellent.

By Wc i assume you mean a head? Mine has a port-a-potty in the cabin with a pumpout fitting at the stern, and a y valve for discharge. I have never actually used it, but it's there.

If you have any other specific questions, I'd be happy to help.

Thanks for the info! for Wc I mean a toilet inside the boat.....by the fact that my father will also use the boat, he want a toilet inside in order to make some 2-3 days trip.
I have another question for you...is it possible to install a little bimini? I don't know if the boat that I'm considering has one, but if not I can buy/make one..

ElitePerformance 01-15-2011 07:54 AM

I've checked the adv of the boat and it has the bimini...maybe it will need a new cover but the structure is in good condition

RT930turbo 01-15-2011 01:40 PM

A bimini is easy, and should be no problem to replace the cover if you need to. I had this top made last year, and it makes spending a few days at a time on the boat much nicer.

C'mon spring

427 larry 01-15-2011 07:33 PM

I had two 303's, and there are a very nice, (roomy for the size), well handling boat. My favorite, till I got my 353. Good luck !.

wantsa311 01-16-2011 07:32 AM

I almost bought a 303 but picked up a 311 instead. A little older but a lot more room.

ElitePerformance 01-17-2011 05:53 PM

What about the top speed? 2 x 330 Mercruiser 7.4 L..... the one that I found has only 160 hours....seems not bad at all, but I have to check at the broker that everything is ok....

I would guess mid 60 mph range... I see 72-74 consistently with half tank and 4 people. That's with slightly modded 454 mags and labbed bravo 1's...

axapowell 01-18-2011 04:10 PM

I had a 1993 303 with 502 Mag, carbs (410hp) with labbed props and running right below the limiter, I would get 72 gps consistantly!

ElitePerformance 01-19-2011 06:51 AM

so around 65.... not bad at all! I'm guessing....it's the first time that I own a boat , so I would know what I have to do every year (maintenance) and the relative costs...

ElitePerformance 01-20-2011 05:44 AM

....what about the price? the Adv that I found says that the boat is from 1992 but registered in 1997, and it has 160 hours.....what do you think is a fair price?

Maintenance on stock power combos is generally pretty strait forward. There is ton's of information on this forum and others when it comes to general upkeep. If you plan on doing the work yourself, you can save quite a bit of money. My winterization routine this year cost me about $250.00 to do everything myself. That included pulling both drives, changing all the fluids (Mobil 1 and merc gear lube), replacing 2 hoses that were showing some wear, new spark plugs, and some other general items. I have no idea what part costs and availability are in your part of the world, but I assume they would be readily available for 330HP mercruisers.

Price depends on so many factors I won't try to even guess. If you compare it to boats for sale in the US, how does it compare? There are a few 303's for sale in the classifieds section. If the boat is nice, well equipped, and you like it, make an offer. It's hard to pay too much for a nice one, but it's easy to pay too much for junk. Make sure you have someone competent survey the boat, this will save you $$$$$ in the future!

Best of luck! Do you have any pictures of the boat you are looking at?

Thanks man! very precise. Here's the boat that I'm looking at.....there are some pics but I don't think that they are big enough to evaluate the boat conditions (click on the pics to make it bigger).
http://www.rivieragency.com/IT/View.taf?IDO=170417&TV=1
In the adv ,the agency says that the boat is in excellent condition, 160 hours, antivegetative done in july 2008, and the boat has been always kept out of the water during winter...
It will be easy to check the boat because I have a summer house in the same place that the boat is listed, so I will take a week end to go there and check it.

RT930turbo 01-24-2011 10:46 AM

The boat looks very nice. It seems expensive vs. US standards, there are some nice examples for sale here 20k USD less. There are certainly more for sale in this part of the world, though.

I assume it would be expensive to import a boat, so the freight and dutys might negate any cost savings, but it may be worth a look.

3 day trips 2 guys one porta pottie? I do not think so. The 6 gallon head in my 382 needs to be pumped out daily with 3 people on board overnight.

How you pump out the head? You have to take it out ? anyway I can do it everytime that I'm in a port....

RT930turbo 01-26-2011 10:19 AM

Mine has a fitting back near the swim platform. 6 gallons in one day! wow... we honestly never really use ours except for emergencies anyway.

6 gallons is a lot....they drank a lot of beer! :drink:

RT930turbo 01-26-2011 10:50 AM

Maybe i's different around here... we just stand on the swim platform :p

rjr 01-27-2011 09:37 AM

NEVER over fill it. It backs up into the toilet. Picture blasting along with a full toilet. You can also picture yourself scooping it out and refilling the beer bottles. Of course you could let it slosh around and end up in your bilge where all the belts and pumps will turn it into a fine mist of uric acid spraying all over everything. So it's really more like 4 gallons. It doesn't take long to fill.

The swim platform works for me too but when you are rafted up the ladies frown on such ungentlemanly behavior.

I've called the owner and I'm gonna see the boat in the next weeks....
I check some video about the 303 engine....but what about if I want more sound?! are there any aftermarket exhaust ? without spending a fortune of course...

Just pull the silent thunder box under the platform... Takes about an hour to do, and gives you open exhaust. There are chrome tips that just plug into the back of the box. They do have internal flappers, but I put some rubber ones on just for safety. Sounds MUCH better :evilb:

So, it may sounds like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iQPgV28dJc ?
I have only to remove the silent thunder box and that's all? I don't understand what you said about internal flappers but I will ask you for more if I will buy the boat : )) . It seems interesting anyway.....I'm not a pro in doing mechanical stuff so I will need a help from someone...not a problem I think.
And what about a valve exhaust to use in open/close mode? I'm sure that my father will complain about the noise....he's more traditional than me! :lolhit:
I've also considered the fact to change the power control to make it look more "fresh"......have you any website to suggest me? of course Livorsi comes first...

ElitePerformance 02-11-2011 04:32 AM

I found this in another thread:
"I had my box off for a while. Got tired of the noise and complaints after a while, so I put the box back on, but removed the 4 plugs. There is plenty of room to add 4 more holes / plugs allowing more water to escape with plugs out, and improve the sound. I like this sound best. Louder than stock, quieter than wide open exhaust without the crackle. Smooth sound, but very deep and does not irritate my neighbors or when going into marinas in the evening."

It seems a middle way from stock to open exhaust....so basically he made more holes in the box? or just removed the 4 plugs? Sorry for the question but sometimes my english doesn't fit very well with specific topic like this : )

Some people drill big holes in the bottom of the silent thunder box, like the kind you would use for access in a floor or bulkhead with a plug.
That way you can install or remove the plugs for more or less sound.

Switchable mufflers would be expensive to install. Just try it with the silent thunder, they really do sound good, like a muscle car. It's a good rumble, but not overbearing. There is no performance increase with the box off vs on.

Sound is a non-issue where we boat, so I don't worry about it much.

As for controls, Livorsi is a good choice!

I just found this pic of the silent box....
http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/a...echs-stbox.jpg
So I have to drill holes (4 will be enought?) in the bottom of this and put something like this
http://www.google.it/imgres?imgurl=h...1t:429,r:2,s:0
which I can remove when I want more sound. Is it right? How large it would be the holes to get a great sound?

ElitePerformance 02-12-2011 04:14 AM

I think that something like this it will be perfect...4" will be enough ; ))
