Formula 382 generator install
I'm looking at purchasing a 2001 to 2003 formula 382 with no generator, however it has AC. What costs can I expect for installing a coast guard approved generator? Does anyone know who can do this on the west coast? Also wanted to know if the generator cooling lines can be plumbed so the generator can be on while cruising.
I'm not really interested on running a small generator on the swim step. Thanks.... |
The factory installed 5kw Kohler generators with strainer scoop pickups so they could be run while cruising. Frankly, i don't see the point, as who would want to be in the cabin at speed. It's no small job, and you may have to pull the engines to do it. I would call the factory and ask them for a basic rundown of parts, wiring and plumbing.

We had express cruisers for years....you won't use the AC while running. Engines will come out and expect parts/labor to be over $10K. (That Honda 2000 isn't looking too bad now huh?)

gen
I also had to have a gen.....never use it. I think Dan at Team Archer in Costa mesa has a used one out of a 382.

I was told it's illegal to operate a generator on the swim step. Is that true? I know it's illegal operating one that is not coast guard approved with the proper wet exhaust, etc and I'm sure the insurance company would not be in my corner if an incident arose due to the unapproved generator. I'm just trying to get my options in line and make sure It's 100% correct with the coast guard and insurance company. |
vegashallet,
I'm here in vegas and installed a 5k gen. in my boat. I can run it up to about 20-30mph and then it starts to cavitate for water (cooling). Usually we will start the genny at the dock and get the a/c going, dirve out of the marina and shut genny down. Soon as I get to the beach I fire it back up again. Got to have A/c on Lake Mead. |
I bought my 7K Koahler on line 6 yrs ago and installed it my self. Pretty simple install. Paid 2400.00 6yrs ago for one that had 20hrs on it. Just keep searching web and you will eventually find a good deal.
