292 SR1 Project

1 Attachment(s)
Well the fun began today on the 292 SR1. For the most part everything on this checks out solid and intact. I fired up the engines today, which both ran good other than I couldn't get water to come out the exhaust. I thought there was a drain open somewhere but I couldn't find it. Then I found it. When the engines were winterized the oil coolers were not drained. Both of them popped the end off. So I think friday I'll be pulling one of the engines so I can replace the coolers. Not a big deal, I have one laying around from my 242 and I can get a replacement for the other easy enough. Either way here are a few pictures, first one is as I got it, being towed home to Michigan here! I'll add more as I go but the project is pretty much going to be on hold until May 24th.

awesome, I think the rubrail is missing, when you get a new one make sure you put a white one on really nice update

Here are a few more after a good bath. I took 3M Finese It to the Imron and it buffed out to like new. Then some 3M super duty to a small area of gelcoat and it polished up great as well... A couple days of buffing and the exterior should be looking near new.

It is missing a rub rail, and that was going to be my next question. Do you guy think I should stick with the factory black or go with the newer white? Black doesn't get beat up looking like I'm guessing white can, but I've never owned a boat with a white rub rail.

absouletly go with the white

Go Black with a stainless insert, white doesn't match the gel color on the older boats very well, and shows scars...

Stainless adds like $300 and lasts forever

mung272 05-04-2011 09:17 PM

Congratulations on the boat. That will be a great project, I missed it by a couple of hours... (I was on a buisness trip)

I'm in Holland, how far north are you? or what lakes should I look for you on?

I'm in Onekama and will keep the boat on Portage Lake. I may bring it down to your area this summer, I've got some buddies in the Grand Haven area.

Looking good

White worked out great on our 242, so much easier to clean and doesn't fade. So well in fact that the 311 is getting it this week.

A few more updates. Here is a picture of the hull before and after. For those of you that didn't see the boat, it was dull, streaked, and chalky.

I used 3M super duty. I want to try the fountain of youth products but I haven't yet. I know Glass Dave loves them.

Well I just thought I would make some updates to the progress of the 292. I had some bugs to work out of the ignition and fuel system but I think I have everything licked now. I bought a set of Hydromotive Quad IV props that seem to be working great, I got a top speed so far of 62 mph which is ok I guess for stock 330's. I did pick up a set of 454 mags that I've going to bump up to 420's which I'll install over the winter. I just recieved the new rub rail which I decided to stick with the black instead of white. I'll get some updated pictures once I get the rub rail on. All in all it seem like a great boat but I haven't had much time actually running the boat, 95% of the time so far as been tracking down issues and fixing them.

Nice project, big boat almost 31 fot with the silentthunder platform??

What about the 242 LS, stil got it?

hotjava66 06-11-2011 07:23 PM

Nice project, looking good. I think the SR1's are the some of the best looking boats made. Sticking with the black rub rail is a good call IMO, keeps that old school classic look. Some guys have been on me to change mine to white but I like the black better.

mung272 06-12-2011 12:10 PM

I too replaced the white rail on my 272 with a black/ stainless...
Looks sweet. bling!

pm me a ph# and I can send a pic from my phone if you'd like...

I still have it but I'm going to sell it, I don't need two similar boats. I've got to pull the 427 out of it and put the stock engine back in, then its hitting the market.

Well its time to revive this tread! The only real issue I had with this boat this summer was getting all the sediment out of the fuel tank, after a lot of frustration, fuel filters and time the boat runs great. I put a set of Hydromotive 24 pitch Q IV's on it and got a top speed of 63 MPH on the GPS. Not bad for stock 330's. I'm in the process of pulling the 330's and building a pair of 550 hp 454's. Hoping to see upper 70's with that power. I'll post pictures as I re-start this project. Here is a picture of it in the water this summer!
