80mph in a 382?

How much power will it take to get an 06 382 to do 80? Will 575hp mills do it?

t500hps 07-25-2011 02:34 PM

My previous 2002 382 ran 80 any day, 82-83 most days....86 on it's best day. (actually ran 98 when first built with blowers but I took them off)

630 hp/700 tq fully dressed on a dyno. Regular length XR's, no boxes. 32P Bravos (86 with 30P Bravos)

My guess is 575's will do it with a light load and perfect conditions.....unless you change the pulley and add an intercooler!!! :)

Friend is looking to build some NA motors that will take his 382 to 80.

MrSneakAttack 07-25-2011 04:11 PM

i would go with 650's.....

t500hps 07-25-2011 04:37 PM

Is this the guy starting with 496's.......swap them for a set of Raylar 600HO's and he should be there.

kjm5125 07-25-2011 07:36 PM

A few years back, 575's with shorties and boxes, prior inter coolers, pulley and computer change, I hit 82.3 GPS on 63 degree day in a 2' chop. Once it warms up, forget it. If you want to consistently hit 80, I'd think 650 hp would do it.

Sure is. He wants nothing to do with computer motors anymore. Less is more in our book. Thinking some 502's with Aluminum heads around 9:1 or even short deck 540's. Something in the 5600rpm WOT range.

I don't blame him. I posted my numbers earlier....these were 500EFI's turned into 540's (with heads, cam, 9.75 compression, TB and intake mods). Looked stock, didn't sound like it at all!!!! Mark Boos did the dyno work and commented I was restricting airflow. He thought I could have made about 35hp more with a good carb/intake.

MrSneakAttack 07-26-2011 08:56 AM

540/650HP would be my choice......thats a heavy boat....anything more he will need to carry a spare drive...

RedDog382 07-26-2011 11:12 PM

If you are looking for an engine builder in the Great Lakes area, I would highly suggest Frank at Scorpion Racing. He (in addition to Robert Nelms and Dave Gerber at Monroeville Marine) has treated me the best of all the people I have dealt with over my many years in boating.

Its most likely going to be higher reving 502's @ 575HP.
Thanks RD, Going to be built in NY.

MrSneakAttack 07-27-2011 10:13 AM

its gonna be tough to run a constant 80 with 502's....just saying...i would hate to see him spend the money and the boat doesnt do what he wants it to do....

Back4More 07-27-2011 10:29 AM

Yeah he knows, but its all we want the Bravo's swallow.

My exact thought when I read your post about hi-reving 502's. Mine lived fine with 4 blades......5 blades killed drives pretty quick (well, that combined with 700 ft/lbs)

Back4More 07-27-2011 11:59 AM

Those Maximus props have been eating drives like crazy round these parts of the Lake also...

What about an Arneson conversion? Should give you close to 10 mph increase, and give you the piece of mind to build some big power.Won't be cheap up front, but definitely be bad a$$.

Kind of what I was thinking. 382's have shown to react very well to the conversion and there WAS a set in the classifieds for like 30k (which seems pretty good) but don't think lasted long

t500hps 07-28-2011 09:21 AM

I'd love to see Arnesons on it but since he only has 496's I think over-powering the bravos would be my first priority.

Back4More 07-28-2011 12:52 PM

We saw those also.....
