37 ss and 40 ss info needed !

Hi guys ! went to see Pat at ocean performance marine in connecticut. First, I got to say my hats off to him and thanks for the time he took to show me his brokered 2002 37SS twin 496's. Very, very, professionnal, even on a boat that is not his stock. I can say that compared to another place I went for another brokered boat, and I can say, the owner will not, get his boat sold by this type of guy !!! Again Nice job Pat !

Long story short, for those of you who owns these 2 type of boats, I need some reel info on:

top speed of a 37SS with 502's:
496's:

40 SS 502's: 496: 500 EFI

AlsoI was told if I wanted to tow it, besides it is a wide load, I would have to take the arch off so it is not too high on the road... any truth to this?

I also met Jonh from comstock marina in Brick new jersey, showed me the 1999 419 liste here in classified ( really a clean boat by the way) and a 2001 40SS 500 EFI. Also professionnal, took a 30 minutes drive to get to that boat to show it to me!

I'm confused a little bit on top speed they reach... Would like the speed and ''trailerability'' of the 419, but the amenities of the SS... nothing's perfect!

Thanks for your input on these questions!

370SS 496mag is around 51, 496HO around 54.

400SS 496HO/502MPI is around 52, 500EFI upper 50's

Downtown42 08-12-2011 08:14 AM

ck out Spicy's 40SS here on OSO if he still has it. Under 100k if I remember.

If your budget will support it, test drive a 400SS with the Volvo diesel package. You'll be surprised, especially at the fuel burn rate.

Sonic Steve 08-12-2011 03:50 PM

On the 400ss you do not have to remove the arch to trailer. although you will have to remove the flag mast, radar and spot light. with that being said that should get you to a bridge clearance of 13'3". Speeds on our 40 with 500's is 58 on gps with 8 people and a 1/2 tank of fuel.

DLEWIS1340 08-12-2011 04:20 PM

The 400ss is a handful to trailer but it can be done. Fifth wheel hitch would be preferred vs. bumper pull. one ton diesel is minimum, i use a 3/4 ton but I don't tow regularly, just to and from storage and house and slip. Slip is only 4 miles and winter storage is 25.

I scout where we are going to trialer if possible & I don't move it far very often. You will need oversize permits and have to run flags and oversize load banners.

I'm happy to talk more if you send me a PM we can get phone numbers.

My 2008 370SS with 496HOs runs out at 55. Both the 370 and the 400 are great boats, but in gas, I would go 370. You really don't get much with blue motors in these boats. And as already said here, the 400 rocks in diesel. I have demoed the Volvo package twice, and it is awesome.

A.O. Razor 08-13-2011 09:14 AM

400SS w. diesels + arnie 7M's = Perfect package.

J.B. Marshall 08-13-2011 09:30 AM

What is top end & cruise speeds with diesels? I'm going to look at one next week.

pokerrunboats 08-13-2011 05:03 PM

47-49 Mph

My 400ss 502 MPI's cruises 3500 RPM = 40 MPH, top speed low 50's. All stock except for SSM exhaust with long tails thru hull with the stock Corsa mufflers, eliminated the silent choice. With the radar dome and light mast removed mine is 13' 5" on my aluminum Myco triple axle, wieghs a bit over 21,000 lbs on that trailer. You need overwide permits along with signs and flags to tow it legally. Also may need a class A CDL depending on how the DOT guy you run into interprets the law.............private vs. for hire. I tow mine with an F550 that has a full air bag rear suspension and the 19.5's so it handles the tonque weight well. Not sure I'd want to tow it with my F350 dually without a gooseneck trailer. If you do end up getting a 400ss and need a trailer let me know. I have a 2008 Manning gooseneck bunked for a 400ss that I might end up selling.

what is the usual maximum height on road we are allowed to? 13'3'' ?

I have a 400ss with 525s runs just under 60 and has bottom paint which slows it down. Arch, radar and light are fine for towing on a Myco Alum trailer that was built a little lower than your average trailer. Tow it behind a Freightliner and would be possible with a dually but not nearly as safe.

JimB-MN 10-02-2011 09:25 PM

Our 400ss with 525s hit 62 gps this weekend. No bottom paint but the bottom is pretty dirty from sitting in the river all summer.

PM me if you would like for me to send you some pictures.

The quickest way to getting BANNED is spamming various threads with the same thing. STOP it.

Shallow Minded 10-06-2011 07:54 PM

A bit off topic, but I've heard these boats are hard on drives. Can anyone speak to that? Redbud has a 370SS with 525's, maybe he'll chime in on speeds.

After circling by the dock a couple of times, at the 1:00 mark, the guy takes off, looking backwards at the cameraman on the dock, and there's two guys in a fishing boat right in front of him.

Ummm, might want rethink that strategy, Homer!
