Formula 292 Fastech

Anybody out there have one of these boats? What do you run for
power and what is the top speed? I am interested in moving up in size to a 292 or a 312. Any suggestions on which boat is better
moving up from a 271? What does everybody think about the 6.2 's? Thanks for any input.:D

Magicfloat 06-09-2002 06:38 AM

Complicated but excellent question. Answer depends on what you want out of your new boat. I love the 292, but it's only slightly larger than the 271. 312 is much bigger if that is what you want. 350 mags are great in both boats, best deal if you are price conscious.292/350s-70 /71mph.6.2s-75/76.377 scorpions if you are willing to spend the money,80/81, an awesome pkg.For price, room and performance the 312/350 mag is neat,65+mphgreat midrange punch, but you don't see many because most think it's too big for small blocks but they are wrong. If you go to big blocks it gets pricey, might as well think 353. If you go 292 have your dealer prop it down one pitch in props or order it that way.An ocasional bump on the rev limiter is more than offset by better overall performance

I had a 271 and traded up to a 292 with 6.2's. I think it is worth the extra $. The v-berth a has a little more room than the 271. I sure you know the 271 is almost impossible to plane off with six people and gear. The 292 has no trouble. I have 26 pitch props on the way, but it will run 71 with 28 pitch props. Overall I am very pleased. Call Robert at Nelem's Marine. He is a great guy to deal with.

NEW 292

I PICKED UP MY NEW 292 THREE WEEKS AGO UP GRADED TO THE 6.2 'S I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE MID AND TOP END, IT IS SLUGGISH ON THE HOLE SHOT,MY DEALER AND THE FACTORY DID NOT RECOMEND CHANGING PROPS ALTHOUGH IT WOULD SEEM TO MAKE SENSE .OTHER THAN THAT THE BOAT IS SUPER, THE RIDE IS THE BEST RIDE OF ANY BOAT OF THAT SIZE I'VE EVER BEEN IN , IM TOPPING OUT AT AN EASY 75

Isn't it true formula is talking about dropping the 312 line. As far as the 292 it is a great boat. I had a 2002 with scorpians and sold it to my dad a few months ago. The best I ever saw out of the boat was 83.7 at 5400 spinning labbed 32's. I also installed headers, K&n filters and reprogrammed ecm's. Yes the boat is a little sluggish getting on plane due to the high x. If you could get xr drives on the boat along with 5 blade props it would cure that problem.

Magicfloat 06-19-2002 05:21 PM

The 312 is still with us. The 03 dealer meeting boat has 496 Mags, I'll probrably buy it. I like the 312,lots of room, good stable ride. Doesn't need a lot of power to run nice.

I had a '00 271 that I recently sold, had a 502 "warmed over" by the folks at Lingenfelter (541 hp) I think just a bit too much for that hull. I've been lurking on this board for about 8-10 months, but am just getting into the posting thing... I was thining about getting into a 292, and based on your posting, I see that you do your boating on Winni. in NH. We've had a place on the big lake since I was 10 mo. old... love it up there! But as you know, it can get rough out there on any given weekend. I guess I'm just looking for some feedback on how you find that boat to be on the lake. If you are getting 75 or so out of the 6.2's, that seems like a good number for that package, do you find that the hull is comfortable above 70? I appreciate any feedback you have to offer, it will help me in my decision moving forward. BTW, for the regulars on this board... Thanks for all the great reading and information, I look forward to contributing when and where I can.

292 on the BIG LAKE

DOTHEMATH;
ALWAYS GOOD TO TALK TO ANOTHER BIG LAKER,REGUARDING THE 292. THE THING I AM MOST IMPRESSED WITH ABOUT THE BOAT IS THE RIDE. I HAVE BEEN OUT ON THE BROADS DURING SOME OF THOSE ROUGH DAYS THIS MONTH 3 TO 4 FOOTERS AND IT HANDLED THEM QUITE NICELY THE OTHER PASSANGERS ON BOARD COULD NOT BELEAVE HOW IT HANDLED THE ROUGH WATER,ONE OF THEM WAS A BAHA OWNER , HE SAID HE WOULDENT HAVE LASTED IN THOSE CONDITIONS FOR 20 MIN.
AT 70 TO 75 THE HULL DOES WELL HOLDS THE WATER STILL FEELS SAFE. AS I SAID IN EARLIER POSTS IT'S A LITTLE SLOW OUT OF THE HOLE BUT THE MID AND TOP END MAKE IT WORTH IT THE BOAT CRUSES BEAUTIFULY 40 TO 60.
I'M OUT OF CENTRE HARBOR BOAT NAME BUST'N OUT, MAYBE SEE YOU ON THE LAKE OR AT THE NASWA.
SAFE BOATING

DoTheMath 06-25-2002 04:46 PM

Sounds like a good review to me. Funny thing is we used to have a place in Center Harbor, in '87 we bought a place out on Black Cat. Thanks again for your feedback, I think I'll take a much more serious look at the 292. The 312 is nice, and it's only a couple of feet longer, but now you're talking big blocks and the probability of not getting a spot at the Naswa, or Wolfeboro on a Sat. afternoon... It's a tough call, trying to balance the size, ride power and ability to get a dock space all in one package. The 292 just might be the ticket...

groove 08-06-2002 08:57 PM

:) :p It all boils down to the Naswa! :p :)

I frequent the Alton Bay area. Nice to see people on the web that are so close. I'll keep an eye out for a new 292 next summer.

mopower 08-07-2002 11:27 PM

Been there...done that, last week as a matter of fact! Damned wind blew almost all week. Crossed the Broads from Wolfeboro back to the NASWA where we stayed, and caught up to a small 20/21 foot bowrider who then proceded to try to stay with me.
:D :D I could see him bouncing in the seat from my boat:D They gave up after maybe a mile and we went one our way across the top of the waves  That was in a 1989 272 , which is the same size as a new 292.
God , I wish I was still there this week:(

delirious 08-12-2002 11:18 PM

I traded up this past april from a 271. I thought about 292, my dealer thought i might not be happy with it because it is not much bigger then 271. My wife and i went with the 312. we are so very happy with it . The ride is great, the size is just right, The cabin is perfect, the cockpit is big enough for 4 or 5 with out being cramped. We ordered it with 496mag ho. Performance is awesome.

Just traded up from a '93 271SR1 to a 2002 292 Fastech with the scorpions, my buddy got it with 6.2's. I run mine with 30's, the 6.2's running with 28's. They are both fast, I am hitting over 81 on a GPS, the 6.2's are hitting 76 on the speedo. The biggest difference is in the torque and mid range punch with the scorpions. I do reccomend the hydraulic steering which is standard with the scorpions and optional with the 6.2's. It makes it an easier boat to drive. Boat rides great in the slop and the cocpit has more room than the 27, and the speed can not be compared.

Donzilla 08-28-2002 07:01 PM

Hello board members,
I also purchased new 02 292 with 6.2's,latham steering,
but I am running lab finish 28's off total marine F2 boat and
have had a 300 RPM increase and app.75MPH on GPS with a
major difference all around but mainly a dramatic difference on plaining.I inquired about 26's but they explained it would decrease plaining. Also if RPM allows 30's would screw two inches further per rotation and so on with 32's again if HP and RPM is achieved.Every 2 inches accounts for speed the way the f2 mechanics explained it to me.Anyway I also considered 312 but was discouraged by the possibity of it's possible discontinued status. But very happy with this boat looking foward to 04 353
with boxes.

looks like there are some owner here.
I'm looking for a 271 sr1 with the 502. 1995 in cal for 35,000 and have seen remarks on the boat of being a 6 out of 10.
What is the top speed on this boat with the 502. Any body have one for reference. And is there room under the sink to put a fridge.
