272 SR1 Exhaust Upgrade Help/Advice Needed!
Hey guys, the manifolds and risers on my 272 sr1 are shot. Instead of replacing them with stock parts I want to upgrade to something like EMI thunder or Gils. I know it is alot more expensive but hey, bolt on a couple ponies and a little more sound right!!!!
Anyway, my question is whether anyone knows if I can use a big block/bravo standard set up or do I have to order something special. The boat is a 1988 if that matters. This stock risers don't look like they are higher than standard but I am not positive. Please help!! |
Stainless Marines are nice because the risers will rotate right and left. I used them on my 242 and they worked perfectly. I'm about to install Gils on my 292 but I'm nervious about the tails lining up with the stock holes as they are thru-transom pipes and there is no adjustment with them. They either work or do not work!

I have EMI on my 1991 292SR1 with 502 and they line up with the exhaust. There is a rubber exhaust hose that connects the risers to the thru hull hardware. It is not 100% but the rubber hose has some give to it...

I know the holes in the transom are a little funku because of the old silent thunder platform but like you said I figured the small piece of hose would take care of that.
I was mainly concerned about riser height. Standard height will do it??? |
std height is what you need!

SM really help so another +1 for them. ALL of the aftermarket systems are wider than stock.
The second thing that really helps is Trident hose. It's expensive but well worth it. Even with the long tails you can get by with the hump hose if it's off by a good bit. The key is factor in the extra cost of the new hose. Even if your old exhaust hose looks good chances are you'll end up destroying it when removing it. |
Give SM a call, I love mine. They sent me the manifolds first, installed and took measurements for the risers. Measure carefully and they'll fit like a glove. I'm sure that's what they will suggest.

I put SM on my 90 292 SR1. Like Cold Sweat says, they send you the manifolds, you bolt on and take a few simple measurements, then they send you the risers. I would highly recomend the long risers that just use a short exhaust hose to connect to the through hull fittings. The long risers prevent reversion and really look great in the bildge. Good luck!!
