400ss trailer requirements?

Anyone got any details? I have found a 38ft ez loader trailer rated at 15k lbs.

Wondering if it will work for my boat? I suspect it was used for a 38 fastec previously.

Thanks!!

C_Spray 12-28-2011 12:28 PM

You're going to want at least 18k capacity, but 20 or 25 would be far better. The trailer manufacturer could tell you if it would be safe to simply upgrade the axles/hubs/springs/wheels/tires. Formula can tell you if the 382 and 400SS bottoms are close enough in shape. My feeling is that your search is not done...

zdek 12-28-2011 02:11 PM

Ditto. We have an Eagle trailer for the 419. Fully boxed with triple axle super singles. I'd say you want an 18k or so. Also note that you may have to consider bunks to accomodate the stepped hull.

Where are you hauling to/from? Is the boat on GLOC? If you aren't going to do it often, it'd be cheaper to pay someone to haul it.

mroberts 12-28-2011 02:30 PM

Boat is on gloc. Hate paying trailer fees for repair work and feeling like I am limited on service company options.

I would also like to be able to tow it to loto or whatever if I get a wild hair.

I would strongly recommend having a trailer built or find one that was built for the 400ss. We recently built an aluminum 21,000lb Manning trailer for our boat.
When we purchased the boat the dealer had a 18,000lb trailer that we bought but was not designed for the Formula. We had to shim the outside bunks up but the problem was the axles were too far back for the weight of the bow this caused the trailer to deflect by several inches.
Keep in mind the boat weighs 15,500 dry and a steel tube trailer can weigh as much as 3500lbs.

any info on that ez loader ? i'm looking for a trailer for my 40' hawk weighs 10,500

wgg 12-28-2011 04:35 PM

I have a 20,000# steel trailer that had a 370ss on it and would handle a 400ss. Very little use been sitting at LOTO for the last 2 years

MDGperformance 12-28-2011 04:52 PM

How much you looking to get for trailer,i have a 40ss wouldn't mind having a trailer for if the price is right, also if anyone has a trailer for this type of boat for boat yard use only i have several 45 excalibers,48 sunseekers 40ss that i work on but my forklift can't pick them up we now sub out a guy with a hydraulic trailer but he is limited to about 40ft

wgg 12-28-2011 06:16 PM

$8,500 Replaced actuator 2 years ago. Pulled it from Co to Loto. Rubber is like new, very heavy duty Has air chambers in frame to keep water out

There was a 400SS trailer listed in the classifieds here last week. I don't know if it still is or not.

I'm going to sell my Myco trailer that is setup for a 400SS
i just had it redone. everything from brakes/ wiring /lights/ bunks
here is a pic from last year before it was redone.
24000 gvw
Also the way it is setup i can leave the spot light and radar on and still be under 14' ( i do have to take the top of the radar off though)

I havent had a chance to get over to storage unit to take pics but when i do it will be listed here.

Nice Looking Setup !!!

Hematite 12-29-2011 04:56 PM

h20: nice setup. Good example of why a custom made trailer is better in the long or short run. Boat hull is well supported, boat rides low and the tongue weight is going to be correct since the trailer is purpose engineered for that exact model boat.
I have to say that the Eagle Custom trailer that my 260SS rides on makes all the difference when it comes to safe, enjoyable trailering.

selpel 12-29-2011 08:49 PM

My thoughts on your trailer....Formula sez it weights in at 16k I have not seen one this light. Would look at 24k gvw to make it safe. Friend of mine has an 05 400SS on a gooseneck pulled by a 2010 Dodge 1-ton weighed it on his return trip to IL at LOTO scale it weighed 31,000 lbs loaded!!!!

Is that the one that came from my buddy in VA?

I believe so, But you would be hard pressed to tell it was the same trailer. The job they did on it when it got rebuilt was amazing.

waterboy222 12-30-2011 11:47 AM

You're gonna need a bigger truck, Matt! Good thing you know some people that know some people with duallys!

Unless you plan on emptying all the fuel and water tanks before you haul it out, you're going to want a 20k+ trailer. Not to mention you have quite a bit of heavy add-ons..

Theres a couple listed in this thread that would definitely be worth looking at. Especially the one at loto.. Try to get a steel trailer if you can, our roads around here make for a pretty dramatic ride with a flexy aluminum beam trailer.. Thats why auston traded off his beam trailer for the steel one he has now.

Spine Tingler 12-30-2011 07:20 PM

You need a truck???? I know of one:-)

I have a 2008 Manning gooseneck for a 400ss for sale here in the classifieds. With the radar dome and light mast removed the highest point is the spot light at 13' 3" as it sits on this trailer. Open to offers, here's a link for more details...............

http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o42797-en.html

Whatever you decide to get you'll need more than a 15k rated trailer. My 400ss weighs around 18k with 502's............it was over 21k at the scales sitting on my Myco aluminum trailer. That Myco is 18k GVW conventional ball style hitch and is borderline for the boat capacity wise. It had 17,780 lbs on the trailer axles and around 3500 lbs of tonque weight.

Hey Dan, so you did end up having it fit to the boat after all? Looks like it came out nice...........alot better than it looked in Texas :) Took some work but I finally got the Hydrohoist squared away and it's been working great for the last two seasons. Have a good New Year
