New here, bought my first Formula
Hello everyone just saying hello. I am new to this forum as I am purchasing my first Formula. This will be my third boat I had a 15' Tri hull, a 1986 21' Searay Seville.
Now on my fifth year of boating I have purchased a 1989 Formula 223. This boat is like brand new, no fading, oxidation, or cracks anywhere. Its yellow, black and grey. I cannot wait to pick it up and start the season. I will be bringing it home early this coming week. It has a 454/330hp in it with the silent thunder exhaust, which will be being "fixed" after doing some research. I cant wait to learn and post some of the upgrades I have planned. |
Congrats . . . got any pics?
Congratulations, Welcome to the team, I'm sure you will love it, I gonna go out on a limb and assume its the one on Detroit craigs
http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/boa/2884374478.html Which it is VERY sharp, I love the yellow on the Formula's from that gen |
That's the one. She is in perfect shape. I'll try ad get some pics up tonight or tomorrow. I don't have many good ones yet. But the whole boat looks like it came off the showroom floor. Out drive is going on Monday or tues then were gonna run it. All I have to do is put a better radio and speakers in it ;). Gonna be great.

don't want to rain on your parade it is a very nice boat but look into the moisture in the transom at least look into why and see if you can stop anymore getting in there seal every thrutransom if it were my boat i would take out all the thru transom stuff over the winter let it air out then reseal everything in the spring good luck with the new toy
I plan on getting a survey. I'm not too worried about the moisture. I plan on taking it all apart and maybe even running a dehumidifier. Then resealing everything.
From the outside there were no cracks, blisters or anything. The thru transom screws, ect look sealed well. The out drive was off all this winter so that may have helped. This guy is meticulous in caring for the boat and everything else he owns. I think it will work out, well see what the survey says. |
As promised here are some pics. These are all I have as she is still under cover.

definitely appears clean
Too bad my picture taking skills suck. Its very clean, Ill have better pics of the whole things within a few days here.
Welcome Emmett...you have found your virtual home!!
I bought a 1989 223SS back in September. You'll love the boat and take some comfort knowing you paid a lot less than I did for mine.
Nice Lookin boat. I too am a new formula owner and I love it!!
Same color scheme as my 86 - 272. I like the yellow trailer, looks nice. Should be updating my build thread later this week with all I have gotten done lately to the engine compartment.
Welcome to the club. Brian |
Thanks a lot everyone. I should be bringing her home tomorrow, if not it will be on or before Friday. Its killing me because my spare bedroom is full of the new VHF radio, stereo equipment, and all my stuff from the old boat that needs to be added too it.....just sitting there :(.
Very nice looking boat. Might be your first Formula but it won't be your last. I have had dozens of boats but I keep coming back to Formula. You just can't beat the quality and reliability for the price.
I also agree, I bought a 88 223LS w/ a 502 about 2yrs ago and love it! You wont be disappointed. Where about's are you located? We should try to plan a Formula Fun Run when the weather breaks.
Im in SE Michigan. Spend most of my time on Lake St Clair. Im new to the performance boating world, but I am learning. I am thinking of buying a 502 block to build. By the time I get it done I figure my current motor would need a rebuild. Well see but I cant wait to just get out there and start running around the lake.
Finally the boat is officially mine. She is beautiful and I get to work on her tomorrow ;). Will be adding infinity sound, and a few other touches of mine.
I was planning on leaving the silent thunder on.....however I have decided that it needs to go. Probably this winter, it needs to be louder :) http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/u...5/DSCF0029.jpg http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/u...5/DSCF0027.jpg http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/u...5/DSCF0019.jpg http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/u...5/DSCF0009.jpg http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/u...5/DSCF0010.jpg http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/u...5/DSCF0012.jpg |
I love that color combo, looks great!
Congrats on your first Formula!! Very nice boat.
I started out, with Formula, in that same layout. Mine is an 87 242 SS that is blue and gray. Your headliner in the cabin will need to be re-glued. We just did that to my 242SS and it worked out great. Also if you get water dripping in the cabin or shows up on the floor, the screws in the windshield frame will leak due to the foam rubber seal leaking under the frame. That requires removing the windshield to replace the seal and if you do that be sure to seal each screw as you put it back together. We are hoping to splash down this year since converting the drive to a Bravo and stroking up the 454 to a 496. Good luck with your upcoming season on the water. |
From one new Formula owner to another... welcome to the club! Nice boat!
Thanks everyone. Went on my maiden voyage today. She ran good, topped at 54 with 3/4 fuel and 2 people on board. Really depressed by the quietness of the exhaust but Ill work on that ;). Heres a few pics, we were the only ones out on the lake.

sweet!
Congrats
Glad you got it and use it already.
I am also rather partial to that color scheme for some reason.... Brian |
I actually like that the exhaust quiets down at running speeds . . . it sounds good at idle.
Loud is just annoying if your not making over 400HP.....JMHO. Don't ruin a classic by making it annoying, Mike.
Nice boat, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I saw it on Craigslist a few weeks ago, but didn't call on it because of the moisture in the transom. Maybe I should have lol. Congrats and I hope it all works out well for you.
Awesome!
