.91 mpg at 3500 in an 18,000 lb boat is pretty impressive. 69.9 mph is even MORE impressive! Your boat?
|

Here's the article from that day: http://www.boatingmag.com/engines/st...lock-offerings |
Not my boat, I have been in contact with the factory on all numbers for Power options, doing my HW so I know which power plant I am going to choose when I order a new 400SS. Waiting on second set of numbers for th D6-400 have them for the G6 props just waiting for the G7 numbers when the weather breaks and Formula has time. The numbers above were the average not the highs and lows. But regardless 70mph and not too far off the 525 numbers for GPH and MPG for RPM comparision. Merc 525EFI @ 5kRPM 56.7mph, 75gph, .76mpg, @ 3500RPM 39.6mph, 43.2gph, .92mpg
Would love to have those engines in my 400 but looking for distance cruiser not go fast. so far the D6-400 is 50mph should go 53/54with G7? |

Chuck, on the day of the Boating Magazine test the boat was actually closer to 21,000 lbs (fully loaded tanks). And we did break 70 that day with similar fuel burn figures!

Those Diesel numbers in the 300 mile range is very interesting to me too. We are back and forth on the fence between a 382 and 400 but the long range is a premium feature for the 400 as much as the speed is for the 382. Then to complicate the mix throw in the Ilmor's. :lolhit: |
The Ilmors are an incredible package, but really are more suited to the 382. If you haven't ridden on a diesel 400SS, you're in for a treat. The torque of the diesels is amazing. Easily the fastest SS option to 40 mph and incredible fuel mileage. The Volvo Penta package is well-proven, and doesn't smell or sound like diesels. I'm going for the diesel package when I order my 400.

No I haven't ridden on a diesel 400 SS yet. I'm looking for an opportunity to get that feel.
I rode the 382 with 700NXT and liked it. We require a generator and buying used there aren't that many boats to choose from much less find with the genny. Several 700NXT in the poker series are out there but none with a genny. We wonder how much the shower is key for over-nighting. That is where the scales seem tipped to the 400. Both are great boats. |

I agree the Diesel numbers are great at the D6-370 best range is at 2500rpm 28.8mph and range of 341 @ 1.52mpg and at 3000rpm 38mph and a range of 328 @ 1.46mpg, the D6-400 is good for 3000rpm 39.25mph and a range of 353 so at 2500 the mpg and range would be much better, not bad for 400hp. New design over the D6-370 per Volvo and 10% more efficient, cant wait to demo one in Florida in 2 1/2weeks with the D6-370, only wish they had the D6-400. Speed of the 725"s would be awesome but the amenities of the 400SS hands down wins with its fastech hull, it's like getting a 382. |

FYI: My first boat ever was a 26 ft Bayliner (cruiser).....don't laugh, bought it brand new at 22 years old (and after getting married and buying a house). Anyway, it had a bathroom with a shower head that pulled out of the sink to "shower" the entire bathroom. Used it once and realized it was a PITA!!! Since the boat had a transom shower "hose" we started showering on the swim platform if on the hook. People around....just leave your swimsuit on. Later when we had the 382 we did the same thing. Worked great just don't wait til it's completely dark, for some reason the water seems like it's 50 degrees after the sun is gone. |
Don't buy a boat because it has a shower. I have a large cruiser sailboat in addition to my Formula. I'll tell you I've never used the shower. If your overnighting you'll be at a Marina, if your at a Marina they will have showers that are much nicer than the shower in the 400ss. That said, if your overnighting alot it would be nice have the added headroom that the 400ss would have. Good luck picking a model to buy!

Wow I love the Ilmor numbers. Our 2012 400SS with 525s has hit 62 but is generally a 60-61 mph boat. That's with a hard top and plenty of fuel. At WOT we seem to generally be around 82 GPH. At 38 it's usually burning about 42-45 GPH.
We picked the 400 mainly for the cockpit space but we use our shower all the time. It works great. |

Those D6-400's would be awesome for the extra they bring to the table in speed, range and efficiency. I would think they could be more quiet than the gas counterparts too. I would love to ride one. |

We would like to do some long cruises with overnighting out on the water. I am an avid boater so at the very least I would be out when most head for the house. :lolhit: Our season is long here in Ga, and with my interests I can almost make it year round. :eekdrop: :lolhit: |

We have overnighted/weekended on our 382 for 12 years. Genny, A/C, hot water, porta-pottie, full canvas and refigerator: no sweat. It's for sale this fall, too!
I am eyeing your boat very hard. When the list started up of who is in line for the buy I figured I would wait till I have the green ready and let the cash talk. :lolhit: My 382 interest is either 700NXT or your setup. I don't know of any other setup I would go for. First come first served? |
Dock lights ruin your night vision, plus I don't run at night. A handheld spotlight is way cheaper and more flexible if you need light. RT930Turbo is first in line...

I love the 400 SS .
Curious to see where the new Mercury Racing 565 fits in . And why hasn't the Mercruiser Volkswagen Diesel been tested ? Same output as the Volvo but much lighter . |

If you look for a lightweight Diesel package for the 400 SS you should consider the Yanmar 370 V 8 Diesels
You will save about 1000 lbs compared to the Volvo D 6 and the drives have a hydraulis clutch which works way better than a cone clutch with the Joystick System Another great Diesel package would be the lightweight 500 HP Marinediesel , based on the GM 6,6 Duramax http://www.performancediesel.com/pro...diesel/vgt500/ http://www.performancediesel.com/wp-...GT500-MACC.pdf http://www.marinedieselengineering.c...gines/vgt-500/ |
