Fuel gauge and sender 272
 

I'm just about to replace my fuel gauge and sender as I'm fed up with the Inaccuracy of the stock set up.

I'm replacing the sender with a tube type, am I right in ordering the 24" length 2 wire sender as the tank depth on my 1991 272 is just over 12"?

Also should I order a 2-1/16" gauge to replace the stock vdo gauge?

Why would you order a 24" sender to go into a 12" tank?

I have the 1991 242 and I ordered a sender a few years ago. I believe it was either the 12" or the 10" . . . probably the 10".

My OEM sender was the tube type (made by VDO). Is your current sender the lever type or something like that? It may have been replaced from the original tube sender.

I had read some previous threads that the tank depth on a similar age 242 was 12.5" so it was recommended to buy a 24" and cut it down to size. I figured 12 would be too short but just wanted to check before I bought the sender. I live in uk and am ordering from US so want to make sure I get the right length. Don't want to have to send it back.

I still have original lever type, factory fitted.

Are you sure that you can cut down the sender and actually have it work correctly?

Yes most aftermarket tube type senders can be cut to half their size and will work.

I just wondered if anyone had the depth measurement of a 272 fuel tank to hand.

Ended up measuring tank depth and it is 16" on a 272 so if anyone is replacing their fuel sender with a tube type you'll need to buy a 24" and cut it down.
