Think you are only talking 2-3 mph off the pace of the 6.2's. Some have run as fast as the 6.2s with just a chance happening stronger pair of 350's from merc. I would take 350's for the right price. Of couse I would be looking to do a 383 or Ilmor Swap in a few years which would drive me towards the cheaper option. Some with 350's had steering added which I would look for as it is a nice add-on and saves a couple grand at motor upgrade time if you decide to go down that path

I would agree, probably 68 light fuel. One thing though like the 6.2s they get to 65 pretty quick, but that last 5-6 MPH takes a while. If you can find one with hydraulic steering its a huge plus. Just had it installed on mine and it is night and day.

NP...if the boat is priced where it should be vs an identical 6.2 boat I would probably go with the 350s. They are just flat out super reliable setups. Also not sure if there is any backing to this but I thought that some 2004 6.2's were prone to problems but other than that haven't heard much of a problem with the 6.2s if you keep them stock

I love a 292...great size, easily trailer-able with 1/2 & 3/4 ton pick-ups...great open ocean boat with super performance. Might be my next Formula....it's got all the right stuff.:evilb:

Just scratch the 1/2 ton, I have done that you don't want to.

I've towed 9000# plus regularly around here in the flat country with my F-150 w/9200# tow package...no issues to speak of. Granted I wouldn't want to do it regularly in a mountainous area. I would do it here with a 292 on a good triple axle aluminum trailer.

My 255 on the 3000# steel monster trailer that it was on when I bought it tipped the scales at 9600# with a full fuel load!!! I. towing about 7500#~8000# now. The new 10,2003 GVRW trailer i have it on now made a world of difference.:evilb:

In summary...what I tow with now and where I tow would not stop me from buying a 292.

You can do it and be legal....sort of, I did for a couple of years. But its just so much nicer with 3/4 and up. Granted the 3500 Dually is overkill, but you forget its there.

Just wanted to weigh in I must have gotten a pair of stronger 350mags, all stock and going up river me the wife two kids, half tank of gas and a big cooler of beer, I got 70.3MPH GPS! Also I towed my boat two times with the F150, and its fine if theirs no hills pulling it, but with a new triple axle break system it still didn't like stopping it! So I bought a F250 Diesel!!

What props and Gears are you running? I'm guessing 1.65 with 28 Bravo?

Pawdog75 05-17-2012 12:24 PM

Not sure of the gears but yes the stock 28 bravos!

Mine does right at 70 GPS also..... with 1/2 tank, and I little chop. I have an 07, 292, with the 350's.......great boat overall. It's for sale if anyone is interested!!!!!!!

I agree with Sprink. You could have the props tweaked for an extra mile an hour. I had mine done by BBlades with the objective a better whole shot. I lost 1-2MPH but the boat planes much better.
