Aluminum swim platform on 242 ???

Hello,

I have a 1990 242 ss with the silent thunder platform. I noticed exhaust has started to leak between the platform and the transom. I have read virtually every thread on this site in regards to silent thunder platforms. I have decided that instead of pulling the platform and replacing the gaskets, (and most likely rot) I am going to be purchasing an aluminum tubular platform. Installing an aluminum platform will probably be quicker than fixing the silent thunder. If I knew for a fact that my platform didn't have any rot, it would be a different story. However, I have noticed several stress cracks around the U-bolts which lead me to believe the wood has pretty bad rot.

Does anyone have pictures of a 242 with an aluminum platform?

Would a platform made for a Baja (like the one from the link below) fit my 242? It appears the Baja transom is completely straight, and I don't think my 242 transom is.

Lastly, can I just put on a set of 4" rubber flappers once I remove the platform and call it a day? Or will I need to do other modifications to my exhaust?

Thanks for any help.

Yes you can just add the rubber flappers. I have had my platform off to reseal it. There are stainless tips in there. I think you could use that one without much issue. The only thing that would be off is the angle of the platform its self.

What color is your 242?

Thanks... I think a law in Maryland was just passed that would require me to have some sort of muffler.

My boat is blue, grey and black.

I have a new, never mounted aluminum swim platform that I no longer plan to use. The mounts are made for an 11 degree transom. Width is approximately 72" (I'd need to measure to confirm).

You might be ok with out the platform. I saw a 242 on the elk river Wednesday. I thought it might have been you.

Has anybody ever just cut through platform where the through hull exhaust comes out of transom and exit under platform?

I have wondered about doing that on my SS. I'm sure some additional braces might be needed. Removing that much material out of the whole thing could make it weaker supporting the upper platform.

I'm thinking just cutting 4 in holes just like the transom and add tipp to that. Still planning this though
