402 SR-1 thread

Why don't these things grab more attention obviously they are big heavy and slow and need some serious power and drives to get them going but super classic and fantastic ride.
Anyone one here own "Outrageous" the all black and orange yellow color scheme?

The 402 SR-1 is my favorite model by Formula, bar none. It was designed for the time-is-money sort of person, who wanted a boat with accommodations usually found in a Lear jet of the era. Essentially, a blend of an offshore sport boat and the 1920s commuter yachts used by the Wall St. magnates of the time to quickly convey themselves back and forth from the office to the summer home.

Unfortunately, the 402 was underpowered no matter what engine package was ordered; the largest being the 550 HP KAAMA which was barely adequate.

The 402 needs at least 650 ft. lbs. of torque per engine, at low RPM, to get rolling properly. 540 strokers would be a good start.

I know of a few that came with KAAMA surface drives. The most appropriate stern drive would probably be the Konrad PRS 540 and a racing transmission, given that most specimens were equipped with TRS drives.

I remember Outrageous was listed in the classifieds here a few years back. It was/is a nice piece.

Found these scans while going through some old folders. Shame the article is incomplete.

It shows off the unique design cues of the 402 to great effect, though.

Thanks four your input JP. That is such a cool article you get the feeling of this baby's obvious lack of speed being totally obsolete as it was just so pimp... did other scarabs and cigs have a wet bar swivel chairs and burled wood I think not haha too cool.
If there was a good one around and I was in that game I'd be in!

I don't know much about the 402 SR1, but a friend had a 357 SR1 with Merc 540's and I believe #3 drives, you could not drive that boat in a no wake zone with both drives in gear, it idled too fast for a "No Wake" , boat ran a little over 80 with fuel, and 4 good size guys, except for me at 190#.We did the BT Poker run years ago in it, and a couple guys, blew outdrives, trying to keep up. Got to 1st stop, raised hatch about 3 inches and guy comes over and says, "what's that thing got for power?", owner says, just stock merc's, raised cover and those big ol' Sterling headers, shining like a diamond in a goats arse, start gleaming , dude just walks away. Best day on the water ever. The original owner was in the boat too, we were all friends, he looked over at me and said, I never ran this boat this hard and just laughed. He was also a former Top Alcohol drag racer.

I stand corrected, the blocks were 540 cu and the motors were 575's, very nice setup. we had the silent thunder off one week to reseal it, thought it was going to vibrate all the screws out of the dock roof. Now days, boats are running up and down the Lake all day long like that. I guess the WP would rather give out BUI's citations instead. LOL !
