Silent Thunder finally removed - 242

I have been wanting to pull the Silent Thunder off my boat ever since I bought it last year. Before I could remove the platform I had to figure out what I would replace it with. I received a few quotes to have an aluminum platform made but I wasn't willing to spend $2k. I almost bought a used platform from a different boat, but I would have needed to modify it to make it fit. I considered making a platform, but I was concerned it would look stupid.

Anyway, I got very lucky and found a used aluminum platform on eBay that was made for a Formula and was powder coated the exact same color blue as my boat. It was only listed on eBay for 30 minutes before I found it. I immediately emailed the guy and sent him $100 via Paypal to pull it off eBay. It has the upgraded outer 2" tubing, the extra grab rail, and the ss ladder. I picked this bad boy up for $850, it cost ~ $2,700 new. He only had it on the boat for a few months.

Here is a picture of the aluminum platform.

Here is a picture of the Silent Thunder being removed. The guys at my marina were a big help!

The platform came off very easily with the exception of a cross threaded bolt.

This is what the transom looked like after removal.

I spent an hour or two wet sanding and was able to get the transom pretty clean. I still have some more work to do but it will have to wait until next year.

Here's how the transom looks right now.

I still have it, I didn't see any rot when I pulled it off. It was leaking the exhaust because the one large o-ring around the exhaust tip wasn't seal properly..

Have him contact me at: Agwert at gmail dot com

If you can weld aluminum it's really pretty cheap to buy I made my own and put it under my old teak for support and will eventually totally remove the teak when I can't restore it anymore!!

Hey man! Thanks... We love this boat... We get compliments everywhere we go. Let me know when you're coming to the Chesapeake and we can meet up, we're on the water every Sunday and most Saturday evenings. Congrats on the new boat!

Here's a pic of how the boat looks now with the platform on...

Nice boat ADoubleU. Love the blue gray and black combination. Always have and will love the late 80s Formulas.

What can I do to convince both Dane and you to make the run up to Barnegat Bay Labor Day weekend for our 5th Annual Formula Rendezvous? Would love to see the 242 in person. Believe we got a guy, DRock(another PA guy) that is going to be bringing his 242SS down. Would love to have another 242 there as well. Let me know.

Im sorry but unless you have someone wrap the stripes around the back of the transom it just does not look good to me, every one Ive ever seen looks like something was lots or missing,

Sorry just my opinion, and we know what those are worth, other then that thats a pretty 242, sometimes I miss mine,

I always prefer to keep Formulas as stock as possible. I always liked the old rectangular exhaust ports. Set Formulas apart from the rest. Even with the old platform the imron didn't wrap around the whole stern. They did extend onto the platform but then ended at the edge of the platform. No real difference from how it is now. At least there is a platform and the blue of the platform is spot on.

I removed the silent thunder box from my 292 Fastech, but so did Formula in 05. That's the only reason why I did, other wise it would still be on. Try to keep my 12 year old bird looking a little current.
