1st Formula, 1st Boat.

I bought a 272 ls a few months ago and I'm looking for some input.
Things like must have products, maintenance tips, do's and don'ts
I know one thing i have been reading about are drive showers since my drives have a bit of the chalky residue.

Definitely find sprink. He will chime in as well as befu as both know lots about these boats.

All of my experience has been on rebuilding one, only about one hour of running it so far and putting it on the trailer 3 times.

Read my thread if you have the time to review all what I have dug into on mine. but my best piece of advice would be this:

If it runs OK and you do not want to do a full restore, do NOT try to dig into a small project. Once you scratch the surface you find out that it just keeps on going.

I started to dig a little bit into mine and stopped when I discovered I was chipping into the concrete the trailer was sitting on.:lolhit: Actually, that is not too far off.....

I really know nothing about maintaining them yet, just rebuilding. If you have a question there, let me know. Many others here with a TON more knowledge than me. But I have been into mine from the transom, bulkheads, stringers, cockpit, finish, cabin stringers and soon to be the v-berth structure.... :thankyouthankyou:

Post more info on your boat in the thread you started, keep it central so others can track it later with thier questions. Plus if you sell it, you can use the thread as a document to show the reliability and work done (hopefully).

What year, what engines, etc.

We had an 89 272 with 454's. Great boat except it sat rear-heavy and tended to porpoise at speed even with K-planes. It also had zero engine room because of the bigger engines (had to pull an engine to replace a starter).

Check stringers in the engine complartment -- we found the broken one when the starter was being replaced. Otherwise, it's a good solid boat.

OK...welcome to our world.:evilb:

Suggest you post some pics and specs on your 272 as well as what your boating goals are.

Meanwhile...I have owned a '86 272 with twin 320 EFI engines that I dearly loved. They are great offshore boats that are a reasonable size, perform well and are relatively easy to trailer with out a lot of drama.

We look forward to your future posts.

AHHHHH...272...CLASSIC

Welcome to the family
Great Choice.
1. Becuase it's a Formula
2. These boats have withstood the test of time and passed with flying colors.

These boats still have awesome lines, even for todays standards. Just an all around powerful and solid boat. You'll enjoy it.

post 1761 and 1769 have pictures. I thought he had already started his own thread, but it was the "post pictures of your formula!!!" thread. It is a very nice and clean looking boat. Tell us more about it.

Well its a 85 272. From what i was told. The hull was surveyed two years ago and came back good. It was pretty much rebuilt three years ago by marine dynamics in michigan. He gave me 30k in receipts to prove it. Two new engines, New upholstery, Lots of new stuff. Drives are alphas that were rebuilt. Props are 23p mirage by bronson hill. Looks to be solid from what i can tell with my lack of experience in boats. Wanted to try something different so i sold my sxs and went boat shopping. I know of two problems it has that really arent big deals but I would like to fix them. 1. On the throttle controls previous owner had a wire rub and short out on port side engine trim control so he wired them both to the starboard trim control. (these controls are the round controls with the trim on the top, I have googled how to take them apart but only have found diagrams on the square/rectangle types) But that only controls them trimming down, the switch will only take up the starboard drive and i have to take up the port with the trailering control buttons (believe thats what they are called). Like i said its not a huge deal, everything still works but I would like it to work the way its suppose to. 2. Is the port engine starter kicks out of engagement sometimes, Not sure if its just the starter getting weak or some spacing problems. But it works too most of the time. Hope it wasnt to confusing.

Check the starter bolts. I have had this problem a a few times and after buying a new starter, I have found it to be a loose starter bolt. first thing I would check.

Brian.
