Winter project 292 88' Remove hook

Im thinking of removing the hook on my 88' 292. Anyone try this yet? Any results? I have heard it is put in there to make the boat "slower" for insurance purposes. Myth? I do see thehoook take about 1 inch of flat surface away from last 3 feet of bottom near transom. Had a friend always buy new Checkmates and that was the first thing he removed, sweared they made the boat faster. Any thoughts? Also would like to gelcoat transom since i removed slient thunder. Formula have a special color/they sell it?
Much appreciated. mike

Curious to see myself. Thinking of removing my hook on my 272

I had a 1990 for seven years and I'd be carefull removing the hook. Mine seemed somewhat "flighty" with the hook. Certainly you will have less wetted surface with the hook removed and that should result in speed. I guess as long as you use your k-planes accordingly, you can control any porposing issues that might result. One of my favorite boats was my 292 SR1, a timeless classic. You might want to also look at extension boxes, although a lot more costly than removing the hook.

The 272 we had we took the hook 4 ft forward. It did not look to us that you could grind it out. You can see it from the inside of the bilge. I don't know if it helped or not we did so much to at one time from alpha to bravos bennet tabs to K planes new motors moved the hook forward but it cant hurt.:whistle:
