525sc in 98 353

I seen a boat 4 sale locally avertised with merc 525sc motors. I have never seen a 353 with the old carbed supercharged motors in it. Do you think this was a option in 1998? Would think 353 would run strong with that power.

I don't think so unless they had some left over motors sitting around....I thought the 525sc were only made until 1996...maybe someone did an upgrade with some left overs....

Thats what I thought. Thanks

I know of a '99 380 PQ that came from the factory with 525SC's so it is possible they were factory installed. Call Formula and give them the HIN and they can tell you what mills came in the boat.

It was a factory option in 98 per my old salesman product info guide.

I have seen 1999 382's with factory 525SC motors. In fact, I own one. Great motors, will run forever with proper PM. Only negative is they like fuel.

I did talk with owner of boat and he confirmed motors where installed from factory. He upgraded blowers to blower shop 250s and cmi headers with stock carbs. He says boat runs low 80s on gps. I figured supercharged carb motors would be thirsty. Kinda neat package i have never seen before in 353. What do you think boat is worth if it is clean on eagle trailer? I see alot of 98s selling pretty cheap? Some people may be turned off by carbed blower motors?

Hard to say what it is worth in today's market, I guess what ever someone is willing to pay? IMO 525 efi's would be best, but a boat with this power will be much more expensive. What I can tell you, is that my 382 with 525sc motors is faster and accelerates faster than the same boat with 500 hp motors (makes sense), but it also burns more fuel. I would not be affraid of a older SC motor with carbs, but I wouldn't be willing to pay a premium for it either.

Jriggs, How do the sc motors sound? Do they have a cammed up sound like 525s and 496hos or smooth sound like 502 mpis at Idle? Do you hear blower wind when in the throttles? I love a motor that has alittle gallop at idle!

jriggs 04-09-2013 11:51 AM

Well IMO, they don't sould like a 502 MPI motor, a little more choppy than that. But they don't sound like anything radical either. They have a nice (not to obnoxious) blower whine from about 3800 RPM up.

I think they sound pretty sweet for what they are....
