I bought a new 98 with boxes and then a new 2000, also with boxes, which I still have. ( both 382s ). I have broken 3 drives in 15 yrs. That doesn't seem to bad to me. ( I boat in Lake Michigan, a lot of rough water ) I do highly recommend replacing the U Joints with heavy duty greaseless ones though, it was a ***** to service the stock ones.
