Winter storage
 

I have an 84 272 is there any problems with storing with these old boats with the aluminum gas tanks empty? I've always winterized and left the tank full but a friend of mine runs a climate controlled cave and they requie the tank to be empty of fuel!!! Will these tanks oxidize or have any other problems?

They are your basic aluminum tank. Empty is fine, and becoming more prevalent. I have kept my tanks empty over the winter for quite some time. No issues. Moisture does not really have much of a chance to get inside the tank, because the fuel vapors remain in there.

Startron, 7.96 at Walmart, I leave it where ever it ends up now days, run threw one tank in the spring and then change the fuel/water separators, never a issue knock on wood

The only issue with storing with dry tank on an older boat is sediment. If there is any it can dry and break up clogging distribution blocks, filters etc in the spring.

The reason for storing them full was to prevent moisture from forming on the inside with the temperature changes. You wont have that problem in climate control and the less weight on the trailer bunks the better.

I filled up with ethanol free 100 octane , and added marine Stabil. Should be fine. I here arguments for full vs empty as well, but I figure with ethanol free gas how can I go wrong. Plus, it ought to run like a champ in spring!

Bob Teague recommends getting the tank as empty as possible. If you use fuel with ethanol the more ethamol there is to absorb moisture. his suggestion is the last time you put fuel in use 92 or 93 octane and add stabilizer. run the boat as low on fuel as you can, the octane drops when stored for a long period, the higher you store it with the higher it will be in the spring. When you add fuel in the spring use the higher octane the first time to help increase the octane of the old fuel. And yes.....lots of powerboat reading in the bathroom over the years, I still refer back to them for info.

I usually winterize with the highest octane I can find I use 92 or 93 octane fuel year around and try to use some marine stabil all summer long it starts and shuts off so much better and seems to run better as a whole !! I've just never stored a boat in a climate controlled cave!! I'm still gonna fully winterize any way it's just a few dollars and getting that water out of everything just seems to be a good idea and a fog down for the carbs!!! We just took our last ride yesterday 45 degrees when we started 63 for the high up the Missouri river for lunch at a casino!!! Put her to bed for the winter tomorrow!!!
