Upholstery Cost
I want to get my engine hatch/rear bench vinyl redone on my 89' 242ss.. the back is actually in near perfect shape so it would just be the top of the hatch and the bottom bench... I was quoted for $400 (using the vinyl that Cobalt boats use)... Not knowing the first thing about this job or its costs related... I need advice... Is this a good estimate?
Reviews on this place seem very good... and they are contracted with many local big name car dealers, etc.. |
that doesnt seem too bad. i was quoted the same for just my small hatch. if they're gonna redo the bench too thats a good deal.
|
Are they going to follow the exact contours of the original or smooth it all out. I've seen some formulas that have new interiors and they didn't look good because they just laid new fabric and didn't do all the tucks and shapes that came stock.
|
Thats a great question... I know exactly what you are talking about too... I want it as close to stock as possible... especially because just the bench/hatch is being done and not the whole cockpit.

They are back in bidness and from what I understand still have all the patterns for our boats. There was a post about them in another forum, probably not the cheapest option but it is worth an email to find out. |
Pulled my hatch off of the boat today, Replacing the wood, $50 new foam 5 X 7 medium density,$90 Scrim, Plastic, Stitching $100 , Vinyl $100 4 yards @ $25. Its $350 in material plus labor, so $400 is CHEAP..

$400 for the rear sunpad and the bench seat sounds fine. The vinyl that is used on Formula's is Nautolex made by Omnova. So, you may want to do the same vinyl. Formula has a special pattern of the white vinyl, and I believe you can still get it through them.
Take lots of pictures of the seats and the various stitching details before you send it off to the upholstery shop. Make sure in advance that they will do the same double stitch work rather than the bead welting that you see on a lot of low-end boats. I re-did may entire rear seat on my 1991 242SS a while back (a la D-I-Y). It was a bit of a job . . so $400 for the stuff that needs replacing does not sound too bad. http://home.comcast.net/%7Etpenfield...fore-After.jpg The top image is the before and the bottom image is the after. I made the sunpad with white/red/gray stripes rather than just the plain white that it was originally. |
Hi guys
Chiming in here I am going to redo the complete back upholstery, sunpad and bench, also the back to back seat And finally the "captain" seat.. My question is how much vinyl do I need ? |

Any one know how much I need to buy each color :-) |

I measured and photographed each piece as I removed the interior. I am going to do a layout for my 311 in Auto Cad and create the cut list for the new backing and vinyl. I am doing all white with a little Teal here and there. Cant handle the PINK

That's a real fair price... Figure if the guy charges $75 an hour and has $100 in material your there.
If he can do both them in 6 hours my hats off it him... And it's prob more than $100 in material. |
This was a mess

I think they came out well

Looks Good, I just went out today and picked up 23 yards of White Naugahyde, ( those little Nauga buggers are fast when youre trying to skin them) and 4 yards of Mercury Blue, so the upholstery will match my Rats,.. Then I will change the stripe on the hull to Mercury Blue later this year,. According to the Sewing Guru the bolsters need a soft pliable fabric to come out good. I'll post pics later too

Those look great. Please post pics when the rest is done! I'm talking to McLeod to find out what they can do. They do have the patterns for our boats.

I paid 1100 for my rear seat, seat back, and hatch
|
I'm not saying that you should pay huge $$ but keep in mind ya get what you pay for. My goal is to always make it look like it was done at the factory. And there can be a lot of time pulling staples out and making small adjustments just you get one small wrinkle out. My best advise is to find someone that takes pride in there work, not how much work they do or how fast they do it. I analysis tell people I do work for please don't take something from me your not %100 precent happy with. If things move a bit once it gets some use bring it back.... We can re adjust things. I don't sew to put food on the table so m not trying to crank work out fast. I turn more away than I do. But I feel it's better to say no than do a crappy job cuz ya don't have the time or will to do it right.

Airfoil... did you get my PM?

I had my rear seat in my 292 reupholstered using Formula material and factory pattern for $400 last spring. Not sure if this helps any.
|
I just had my front seats done to the tune of $3125.00. It all depends on the material and stitching you want done.
