After 3 7.3 fords, I defected. Didn't want to deal with the 6.0 garbage, and wasn't ready for 10 mpg with a 6.4. Can't afford a 6.7... Sooooo I was actually looking for a super low miles 7.3 with a zf 6 speed. Problem is they are impossible to find, or they are way way way over market $$$$

I'm a huge fan of a stick, and I despised towing with the ford auto. Decided to give the Allison a go. I figure it's about the closest I can get to a real heavy duty trans without a clutch pedal. I've heard nothing but good things about the LBZ trucks, and so far I'm loving it

I had a white 06 Duramax x-cab pulled 30ft camper or my boat like they were not even there. Added hypertech max energy programmer and that thing really came alive. Loved that truck but decided to down size after getting rid of camper. Still have programmer though.

Someday, Someday! Maybe late summer, doubt we can do the run, but wife really wants to see Niagara Falls. Good excuse to hook up with the east end Erie crew and do some boating

Bout time you got a real truck. I've had LB7, LLY, LBZ, and now LMM. Love em'!

aquaforce 05-02-2014 08:33 PM

Oh yes you absolutely got the right truck. I really like that white too.
I have an 06 LBZ and I love the power. It would be perfect if it was white though.
When I brought my 357 from PA to Atlanta I ran up the WV mountains at 6% grade doing 75 all the way up. I was impressed with the truck and that was the first time I worked it any. After that climb the trans never hit 200°F but I also have an aluminum deep finned trans pan for extra cooling. Same on the diff with aluminum cover and it was barely warm to the touch after that mountain.
I changed the wheels and tires to 17" Alcoa and love how it handles.
Great choice.

A buddy from work has that in a 3/4 Suburban and loves it. It is not common as you say but it is a brute and the only thing that can beat it is a diesel. I think that 8.1L set up is the best gas option but no longer available.

That is what I forgot to mention. I did the same. The trailer plug I located up in the bumper beside the license just like the spare lock is. It looks nice but the trailer cord has to be longer for right hand turns.

I thought I wanted to buy a duramax until I talked to a diehard duramax guy that told me injectors usually last about 100k miles and cost about $5000 for parts and labor...I bought another cummins...

From the research I did, the injector issues were confined to the earlier LB7 trucks. Supposedly the LBZ is good to go. Only time will tell!

MR252SS 05-03-2014 09:11 PM

I had problems with oil cooler lines. Chevy dealer told me it was pretty common issue. Other than that no issues to 90k miles when traded.

Yes that is correct but not the only factor. The later design is much improved in many more ways than the fuel system. Some change fuel filters often and some don't. Some run lubricity additives and some don't. Those are huge impacts in the end result. Even if they are die hard loyalists but don't do maintenance they are not a good representative of product capabilities.
I am at 92K miles on mine. Never a moments issue and I expect to hit closer to 200K miles on my fuel system components. No diesel system is immune to fuel system repair. Maintenance goes a long way but they all break some time.
Cummins is good but their problems are well known too. Less in fuel but much more in air handling equipment like turbo etc. That can cost the same or more as fuel repairs. I know because I have paid some company bills on this stuff.

Mine leaked right after it got cold the first winter I had it. I was surprised at how inexpensive the new lines were. I replaced it and no leak since. Strange how it would leak on cold start up but would stop after it warmed up. I made a run with it doing that on me but the knowledge of a leak drove me crazy so I fixed it. The leak was very slow and slight but a leak for sure. That was also remedied in 07.
