A good day turned bad

I thought I would share my misfortune, that all happened because a young lady wasn't paying attention to the road. I picked up my new to me boat on Friday, April 18th. It was a 94 Formula F271 SR. I left with the boat and made it a whole mile down the road before my day turned to crap. I was sitting in traffic stopped, waiting to take off when I glanced up in my side mirror and noticed a car coming up on me very quickly and didn't appear to be slowing down. I knew what was about to happen so I braced myself and sure enough I became the victim of a texting and driving accident. I owned the boat a total of 10 minutes before it was torn all to pieces. She was alright, just shaken up a bit....the boat and her car didn't fare so well. I'm just glad nobody was hurt.

These were taken when I picked it up

And this was a few minutes later.

That sucks. Sorry for your misfortune.

Sydwayz 04-30-2014 02:00 PM

DAMN. She whacked you hard.

That's going to be an insurance nightmare.

redwhite 04-30-2014 02:03 PM

Ohhh cr@p. Good to hear everyone is OK but that totaly sucks. I hope you can get her back together and enjoy it this year.

Haven't gotten the official word yet, but I think we will be able to go ahead with the repairs. The estimate for the boat only was just shy of 19K. If it does get fixed, then it's getting an XR upper with an imco -2 lower and a full imco hydraulic steering setup.

84 Formula 272 04-30-2014 02:15 PM

What a rough first day!!!! Hope everything goes well with insurance and repairs!!

beaver 3 04-30-2014 03:56 PM

I hope you wind up with upgrades. Sorry to see that.

Roody727 04-30-2014 04:19 PM

That SUUUCKKKSSSS!!!!!!!! Glad your alright ... Keep us posted!!

HyFive578 04-30-2014 04:24 PM

That really sucks!! Feel for you... Hopefully, the insurance company will come through and you'll get this behind you and enjoy your new to you boat. The texting/driving thing is a really a problem. As the father of two teenage drivers, I am very sensitive to this and my kids know that if they ever get caught doing that, their driving days are over. They've even signed "contracts" with me to that effect. At least you were not hurt. My father's best friend was killed four years ago coming home from the supermarket from being rear-ended by a girl who was texting...

c_deezy 04-30-2014 04:30 PM

Yikes that sucks. She took out everything!

Make sure you look over the inside stuff extremely close, i.e. engine mounts, stringers, etc. I would be worried the impact force transferred through the input shaft into the engine itself, as well as damage to the bow of the boat with impact to the bow stop. Especially if it was hit hard enough to shove the boat forward on the trailer that much.

Splitdecision271 04-30-2014 05:05 PM

My heart goes out to you and her. Her being the boat if course. That is one of my worst fears come to life while Trailering. I sweat like a pig whenever I trailer the boat. Not so much on back roads but highways. Always worried about that person cuttings me off or coming to an abrupt stop from 50mph to 0, texting while driving, or looking at the boat and not the road and turning into the side of me.

That's why I trailer early morning or evening when roads are less traveled, but understand it could happen at any time. Best of luck with her. On a bright side it's only going to get better from here on out.

thirdchildhood 04-30-2014 05:10 PM

I'm really sorry man. I got rear ended when my boat was 2 years old. Not nearly as hard as yours though. It ended my boating season and progressive was a nightmare to work with. I had to threaten to file fraud charges and sue them. Hopefully you have good insurance and not progressive. That really sucks, and at the start of the season. :(

She was the Hitter. Seems to me HER insurance pays.

phragle 04-30-2014 05:32 PM

Looks like she was driving a newer car, most likely financed so she should have at least ok insurance. Reminds me of a saying I have heard about a sign in front of a church...

If you love Jesus
honk as you drive by
If you want to meet Jesus
text as you drive by.

phragle 04-30-2014 05:36 PM

Look at the bright side, you just got a new transom, transom assembly, drive, prop...............

Hopefully. The trailer repair/replacement will be the deciding factor.

The driver that hit my boat was ticketed but my insurance was responsible for my boat. That's how no-fault works. May be different in your state.

Progressive wanted to weld things, straighten things, repair mangled prop. On a two year old boat. They charged out parts that I proved were not replaced. It was a nightmare. Insurance has changed.

MR252SS 04-30-2014 07:06 PM

What a nightmare, hope everything works out!

88242LS 04-30-2014 07:42 PM

Ugh that sucks, 271 is a great boat, hopefully u can get it all straightened out,

gmgearhead454 04-30-2014 07:49 PM

Omg that is a terrible! Absolutely beautiful boat, hope they can get it fixed up... damn... and they say that one of the two best days of your life is the day you buy a boat... lol let's hope it just gets better from here!

duck_04 04-30-2014 07:52 PM

Her insurance company is nationwide and they accepted fault. So far they have been pretty good to work with.....Knock on wood.

flatlanderbill 05-01-2014 06:03 AM

Wow , that sucks . Not sure how well I would have handled that. Hope you are able to get it repaired quickly. Having a new to me fountain shipped Tuesday from N.C. to Ct. , up until now I was worried about flicked cigarette butts and bad weather , yikes!

duck_04 05-01-2014 06:07 AM

After I made sure she was ok, I think I made up a few new cuss words. I'm just glad it wasn't a guy driving the car. I can't afford an assault charge.

shepnic74 05-01-2014 10:08 AM

Wow what a bad way to start off sorry dude but at least everyone is ok. Hope you get her all fixed up before you loose to much of the season. By the looks of the pics the boat won and the girl was lucky you didn't buy a twin screw

glenncal1 05-01-2014 01:18 PM

I lost a Sonic that was being transported to me, like you the only ride I had in the boat was the seatrial. My boat was totaled, glad no one was hurt.

payuppsucker 05-01-2014 05:42 PM

Hate it for you bud, hope everything goes better than expected. BTW, you live in a cool little town and a beautiful part of the state.

Jordan 05-02-2014 12:30 PM

Ouch! Best of luck getting this all taken care of. Should be a no brainier on fault, just hope they done nickle and dime ya.

duck_04 05-12-2014 07:07 PM

Looks like I get to keep my boat. I received the settlement check today, so the engine will be coming out this week to begin repairs. I already have a drive bought, but still in need of a complete transom assembly with hydraulics if any of you guys run across one. If I haven't located one in the next couple days, I'll start a new thread.

duck_04 06-24-2014 05:16 PM

Just thought I'd give an update. It was finished just in time for me to enjoy it for one weekend before having to leave on a month long work trip. The boat ran and performed very well. I'm still playing with props to find the right one with the new ratio and x-dimension. I have 2 weeks left of my trip, so needless to say I'm very excited to get back home and get out on the water.

Also had a chance to play with my new gopro. Quality sucks because all I had was a cheap sd card.

Glad you got her back running

MR.HAPPY 06-24-2014 06:14 PM

Better do something with that trailer soon... Dont look very strong!

duck_04 06-24-2014 06:19 PM

It's fine, just an eye sore. It's gonna get some love this winter.

Tinkerer 06-24-2014 09:05 PM

When the truck and trailer are on flat ground the trailer frame should be level to the road. It looks to me like you have the hitch too high.

92nsx 06-25-2014 07:51 AM

Nice work getting it repaired so fast! Im suprised $19K didnt total out the boat, and they paid! .:eekdrop::eekdrop::eekdrop: That had to be pretty dam close or higher then the value
