White dashboard, newer graphics, etc.
started on the Fastech.

So most of the changes are cosmetic.

What about the performance between the huls one step or no step ??

Some claim a difference, some say none. I had a 2000 Fastech with 572 HP that ran mid 70s. With the stock 415 HP 502 best I saw 64 mph. Most cosmetic changes started around 1998.

I find a litle strange that Formula choose only one step in a racing hull ??

After reading the 96 Brochure and the 97 FASTech brochure, I see that the hull, strakes, step, pad and notched transom are the big differences. The 97 still has the black/dark gray dash, where as the 98 started the white dash. Keep in mind this coming from a novice compared to some others here on the board, I don't know a whole lot about the earlier models.

I've started to have a real appreciation for single step. Got a buddy with a 2000 271 with single step. Boat runs and handles great. Gotta another buddy who's pop has a 312. It is an absolute wave crusher. Rides like a dream, amazing how different it is from my 292 with twin step. If given the option between 312 vs 292 I might have to go 312.

SR1 which is really a 272 is about two feet bigger, but Fastech has composite grid stringers, no wood except transom. I would think the Fastech would be lighter.
