Procharger on a 271

What do you guys think about supercharging a 502 mpi with a procharger in a 99 271? This boat was offered with a 575 so I would think it could handle the power. What about the stock bravo drive? I have heard some people say if you don't hit the throttle hard these drives will hold up. I am looking to upgrade my power and this seems like a reliable and the best bang for the buck way to go. Thanks for any replies.

I would call Dustin Whipple and get a quote from him, he is a regular on the board so e-mail him if you like.

I went the route of the "PRO Chugger", and I would never do it again, but that's just my two cents bro.

Good luck and enjoy your bird !:)

My buddy has a 2000 271, he put a Whipple charger on it. After placing the Whipple here are some of the upgrades he had to put on later.

1. Hyd steering, boat now goes 80mph+
2. Teague Custom Marine Drive, blew the stock drive
3. New head gaskets, blew the stock ones water entered engine

cost after the purchase of Whipple around $15,000

Be careful

I have done the ProChargers, both carb & EFI models. They are BETTER for heavy boats than Whipples. This is the reason why- The maximum load on a drive is coming on plane and as per another post the Whipple hits maximum boost immediately at 2000 rpm. That means maximum torque and strain/pressure on the drive.
A Procharger builds power/torque more evenly as the rpm increase and reach maximum boost at higher rpm/maximum speed runs. It is not unusual to be running "0" boost at 3000 rpm when cruising, therefore boost with a PC is relative to rpm & throttle opening.
The PC has a better intercooler than the Whipple so less chance of engine knock problems. If ever there is a problem with the PC just disconnect it ( hose or belt) and drive your boat on in, You cannot do that with a Whipple. The Whipple is also positive displacement and even with teflon rotors there is wear to the rotors and they build more heat than the PC> I have never had a malfunction due to a Procharger, but it must be done right.....as with everything or with any brand. Also, my '97 312 Fastech now runs 83 (454Mag efi's) only running 3-5# boost.

Yes, I like the Procharger
