Here is mine, A work in progress. I spent all last winter redoing the Freshly redone engines with the boat on a lift at the lake. This winter with the engines under control I'm sewing up all new cockpit upholstery. Would love to see some other 402"s out there.

Cool boat. Neat project. Amazing that a boat that is 31 years old would still look cool sitting next to any boat on the water today. Not a lot of manufactures have that.

Your black 402 looks great.

chris302 02-13-2015 02:09 PM

Chris, what are those out drives on the model? Are they off the shelf?

Mr Maine The out drives are Amps outdrives from the 80's very rare and hard to find now.. A lot of people just collect the out drives. I think I paid $500. each used and have to make the plastic u-joints for them. they are fully functional with steering and trim.

Mr Maine 02-14-2015 11:06 AM

Cool, i figured the were kind of rare

OPIE272 02-15-2015 09:52 PM

Chris, good to see you started to refresh the 402.
Need any help?
I like your "Mini Me" 402. 😉

chris302 02-18-2015 05:27 PM

Thanks OPIE272 I'm making progress as time and money permit. Hopefully make it through another summer uneventful, then next winter gut the cabin and replace the trannys with a set of Hubers I just picked up.
Was that you I met at wood Island on Texoma this past summer.

OPIE272 02-18-2015 10:47 PM

Mark when did you move to TX. It has been a long time since I talked to ya! nice to see you still around!!!

OPIE272 02-19-2015 10:17 AM

I don't surf the web much anymore. So I probably dropped off radar for a bit.
Moved 2yr ago.
Missed 1 entire summer with relocation issues.
Only went out a couple times last year. About $2K in fuel.
Just enough to freshen the 2 year old fuel left over from 2012.

Gh700xx 02-19-2015 11:33 AM

wow the 402's are great looking boats. im starting a 311sr1 resto project soon as my fountain sells. Id love to have a 402 someday they are a classic and still look modern to this day.

It was nice too meet you. That is a sweet boat you have, love the engines. I hope to do some like that with mine in a few years.

kevlar382 02-28-2015 08:59 AM

The 402 SR1 is one of the best looking boats ever made. Its so cool that you guys are redoing them and keeping them alive.

gms 06-18-2017 09:22 PM

Chris,

I just purchased a 1987 Formula 402 SR1, I think it's similar to yours. What have you found to be the most dominate issues? I do have some "rot" around the fuel tanks that needs to be addressed.

thank you,

GMS

chris302 06-21-2017 03:55 PM

GMS, Congratulations and post up some pictures. Most all my issues stem from previous owners incompetent mechanics, crappy wiring ect. The screws from the hull to deck are an issue and do come loose. that is on my to do list. I had a serious car wreck may 2015 and have been sidelined from the boat. just finishing recovering from the major spine surgery and hope to be back on the water next month. Luckily have some good friends at the lake who have been servicing and running it the last two years . Also there is a sump pump under the step down to the cabin. Make sure it works there was no floor drain on my cockpit floor so if you got caught in rain that water went into the cabin. Mine has 420's and trs outdrives 21 pitch props seem to be the best so far.
Good luck they are fun and like rough water
Chris

here some pics of the cockpit sewing I did. had some wrinkles at the grab handles but the sun smoothed them out. this winter i'll gut the cabin.

OPIE272 06-21-2017 04:34 PM

Chris. I saw your boat last year running towards the dam. Didn't recognize the driver so I ran it down. 😎
The driver explained, they were friends of yours, running some gas out and keeping it fresh for you. 🤔They were taking good care of the boat and being respectful on how they were running. I didn't like it, but they sounded really sincere. So I let it go. Later went to your slip and it was tucked in and put away where it belonged. Figured since they were not driving it like they stole it and then put it back... it was probably ok.
Sorry to hear you were laid up. But it's nice to hear you have good friends looking after you.

Maybe see you @ wood island this fall.

chris302 06-21-2017 06:07 PM

Hi Opie,
Yes that was sam driving my boat he told me you were checking on him. I appreciate you taking the time to check him out. I had one ******* try to steal my trailer last year luckily his boat was too big and damaged his boat. Hope to see ya on the water soon!
Chris

Was trying to post a pic of Chris's 402. Guess I'm not privileged or smart enough to be able to post. 😏

OPIE272 07-19-2017 01:46 PM

Chris 302....
You involved with U dock?

OPIE272 07-19-2017 01:49 PM

Can't get any uglier than that can they?

techman 07-19-2017 02:01 PM

How about some M8's for your model?

:)

chris302 07-19-2017 05:26 PM

Hi OPIE272
that is terrible about U dock. I have met a couple people from there over the years thankfully mine is safe on N. From what I hear the girls that clean my boat were cleaning next to the one when it caught fire this morning.
You have your surgery yet? I thought you said you had one coming up.

chris302 07-19-2017 05:35 PM

Hi TECHMAN,
I will keep those in mind. I am just now getting the big 402 back on the water hope to get the little one back out next year.

gms 02-11-2018 03:36 PM

Chris,

Thank you. I will post pics as soon as I can download them. I am replacing both 454's this Spring. I have TRX Drives, any suggestion on larger size motors that the drives will handle? I was thinking 540 Stokers.

Thank's for your input.

Michael
