Alpha SS on a 272?
 

Anyone running Alpha SS lowers on a 272 LS or SR1?
Curious of the results.

Why would you want to go that route?

SS lowers ? Why, you have SS tops (with out lowers) lying around ? Odd ! LOL.

The ss alpha was faster on a 272 but you can't just bolt an ss lower on a regular upper, it was it's own unit. I don't know how much faster but my 272 runs 64 with 330 horse big blocks and bravos

Good luck finding two of them. Unless you find an old boat with them on it still.

SEI has no plans to make a shorty alpha upper. Too bad, I think there would really be a market for them.

Sprink on here had one, he may comment. Supposed to be faster, maybe 4-6 mph? I forget. Not much GPS or radar guns back then, so hard to really know I guess. If I ever want to do that, I think I will just recut my transom and raise everything 2". Of course, after a few years now, I also just want my boat to run. Well. Without breaking. If that happens, I will probably not want to take it apart. It is an old resin bucket, never going to be fast. Doesn't matter - get it running and have fun.

Drives that seemed like they had awesome potential: Blackhawk and Alpha SS. Both ended, must not have been that awesome or easy.

Your looking at just the lowers? Not sure if that would do anything. Alpha is supposed to be pretty good up to about 65 isn't it? After that it needs a nose cone (according to internet, always right /???) I thought the SS lower was a mercury lower, just more streamlined. The shorter height was in the upper portion and is unique.

Not sure if the lower was different, or just a standard outboard foot. Still, probably not get you much or anything unless you are already north of 70. If it was easy, they would have done it and made money I guess.

I originally mis-understood and thought the uppers were the same. I'll be looking for complete alpha SS drives. And for those ask why, everywhere I've read shows very positive results, both with speed increases as well as handling. Consistent 8-10mph gains

Depends on boat. Some report into 70's.

My current boat hit prop blow out at just about 65mph with the regular Alpha.

Like...major blow out....seemed like the coupler blew.....yup, that bad....would have to coast to off plane, to go again. Took me a while to figure out what was happening and when I'd ask people abou nosecones and blow out I routinely got that it wouldn't happen at that speed. Well, I'm here to say, yeh...right.

Hydromotive nose cone fixed that and let me go past that mph with better handling at all speeds.

They stopped making the nose cone (yrs back). Couldn't get another for when I got another drive.

Oh well. I acquired an Alpha SS and will be installing this spring.

Edit in: Above boat, not a Formula. Just a small single engine sportboat.
