What is it worth?

Hey everyone. went looking at a 1989 223ls 454 bravo 1 that came up for sale really close to me (20 minutes away). He is asking $9999. I was really looking for a 89 242ls but this one happened to come up. Not sure what Its worth though?. i have a hard time finding others in this size for sale to compare. Is he asking to much? What should my target price be?
its in good condition for the year and being all original but not perfect. could use a new rub rail, everything works and gauges all work but he said they are not terribly accurate but get the job done...so they could probably be replaced. eagle trailer was in alright condition. interior needs a good cleaning and it would be passable for now. few more years and i would probably want it re-done. he removed and tossed the potty he said because he thought it was grose and did not want to clean it from the last owner... can you buy these things even? i doubt i would use but would be nice to have. he started it up in his driveway and it ran great. motor was completely replaced not rebuilt. 400-500 hours on it now he said. uses the boat every weekend. some scuffs on the stripes and a couple decent scratches where the anchor was pulled up and hit the side. freshwater only. he is the 3rd owner. willing to take me out on it this week if i want. selling to buy something more in the sun sport range.

anyways like i said needs i would say some cosmetic work but it is turn key. whats it worth?

Well I just traded in a 1996 baha outlaw sst in excellent ,condition with a 454. For 14.5. That boat. Was near perfect. Including the trailer. Bravo one boat

I would think for about the same price or just a bit more you could get into a 242ls. Or shot him a lower offer if he takes it great if not walk.

NADA comes in at about $8500, which surprised me a little.

I'd say $8-9K is a good figure

Being on the west side you'll really appreciate the extra length of the 242. 10k seems really optimistic for the condition of that 223.

7-9 is honest, me personally I's spend 9-13 and get a 242, but I know how it is, 223 is a great boat friend has one, quick little thing to, but the 24 degree hull on the 242 makes a big difference

Fman 07-14-2015 02:23 PM

I really want a 242 but it seems like all I find are in the 15k price range. Probably a large deciding factor would be will a 223ls with a full tank of gas on trailer weigh more then 5k lbs? No gear just boat, gas, and trailer. I have a max towing capacity of 5k lbs so If I can pull a 223 I'll look for those as that would save me a ton. If I need a new rig either way I'll just get a 242.

The 223 is listed at 4200 pounds dry. That may be with a 350, so the 454 would be more. Add 300 for the BB, Add 500 for fuel, and 1000+ for a trailer. No way will you be under 5k for towing.

The 223 is a nice boat, but it is closer to the 206 than the 242. The ride of a 242 is much softer and it can take bigger water. I would look for a 242 for your needs, and one should be had for around 10k.

Alright guys I found a 88 242ls...but it needs TLC. He says obo so I'm not sure what he will go down to...going to call when I get out of work. How much does upholstery cost these days? Also fixing the deck? It's my favorite color scheme and has about everything I want (minus bolster seat) and it's only 3 hours away. What you thinking price? Given everything else is as mint as he says

I am in Holland and had a 223. It was a great boat and could run lake Michigan comfortably most of the time. I towed with a 4runner 5K towing capacity with no issues, very easy in and out at the ramp and fits easy in the driveway. 242 is a LOT more boat. I think you will be happier all around with the 223.

http://www.formulaboats.com/wp-conte...a-Brochure.pdf

the 89 brochure has the 223 at 3750 lbs and the 242 at 4150

Well the 223 that I went to look at is still for sale... he is now at 9k. I tried to offer 8k again and he won't go that low yet. I'll put up more pics of it. Could probably get it for 8500. Cuddy is worse then the 242 but the vinal is better in the 223 but no perfect either...

That is rough, I would pass. Lots of boats will come on the market soon with winter coming. Clean Formulas pop up regularly for fair prices but they go quick so you have to be ready.

Fman 08-21-2015 08:49 AM

Thanks. I'll keep looking. I am in no rush as their is not much boating time left. Wish I could travel a ways but working 6 days a week only leaves me with a solid day to get one and come back.

Had a 223 for ten years nice little boat handles rough water pretty well and pretty fast with 454, 242 is going to handle rough water better, and need a lot more power to be as quick, Can still tube en ski with 223 dont know with 242, One thing to remember is that length on these boats does not include swim platform 223 is 22ft 3in and 242 is 24ft 2in , so these boats are larger than newer boats with built in platforms,
good luck in your search be patient there out there.
