Power for an 86 Kaama 357 SR1
I'm looking for some input on what power to get to install in this style hull. I know that the Kaama drives can't take a ton of power but would like to have some reliable power. The original owner of the boat lost the blocks due to freezing and sold off the 990 heads that were on the engines. I was looking for some input as to what I should look for, maybe some 454 mag short blocks and add some compressios and cams? Also, the owner does have the original intakes, carbs and exhaust.
Thanks in advance! |
I did some real inexpensive 365 mags for my brother in law, summit flat tappet cams, stock 088 heads, pair of Holley 750's and stainless marine exhaust. Pushes his 28 Apache 74 mph, responsive and great mid range. I know a hyd roller would be much better but his budget was beyond tight and this worked awesome. I'll get cam specs tomorrow.

Depends on you budget. 454s are cheap but for a big heavy hull like that I would put 540s in it at a nice reliable 550hp or so.

I do know the hull is heavy, but unless I can get a smoking deal on some big cubes the 454 will be the route. I should add that I might stroke them too.

With 425 Kaamas formula said 67, but only 62 with 420 trs. We dynoed a 454 mag we built up at 500 horse and 540 foot pounds. Increased the speed of his 242 formula from 56 to 68 and it wasnt a big money build by any means.

Mr Maine, would you happen to have the engine specs? If it's easier you could PM me the specs.
