Anyone with a 90+ mph 353?

Wondering how well this hull handles speeds over 90 mph...
I've been having some silly ideas for my 500's

Rattlesnake Jake 02-02-2016 01:15 PM

Thinkin youl'll need 650-700 a side and a pair of good drives.

t500hps 02-02-2016 03:10 PM

Your not the first. I had over 800/side on a 382, then reduced them to about 650/side (540's, no blowers)

I'd highly recommend leaving the engines alone and spending the money on an ASD conversion. You'll spend more at first, but less in the end (unless you have a stack of drives laying around). With those drives you'll never worry about them and the boat will pickup about 10 mph! If you ever need even more speed, the drives are already done. To get 10mph with your bravos you'll spend roughly 1/2 what the ASDs cost anyway. The hull won't be a problem.

Back4More 02-02-2016 06:42 PM

Yeah ASD's would be too much work. Going to have too keep it Bravo. 700hp with 4 blade Hydros on them should be doable.

Lake Effect is the fastest 353 I have read about. Appears to handle 100+ mph just fine.

Powerboat magazine had it at just over 90 with a 600sci. I know that seems like a stretch but I thought they were reputable back in the day.

1989mach1 02-02-2016 09:27 PM

Lake effect is a buddy's boat and that thing is quick and good at hi speeds.

Apexwarrior 02-03-2016 05:44 AM

780 per side with XR's. I run mid 90's with a best of 97 on a perfect day.

I wouldn't say over 100 is just fine. It can be done certainly, but the skill required starts going up exponentially around 90. That's where you really need to start paying attention.

This much power through XRs require rebuilds every 3-4 seasons (or sooner) depending on how you run. I would look into Arnseon's and look into more power. I see pluses and minuses for both. Money no object, Id go with Whipples and IMCO's personally.

Thanks for posting the link...Lots of good info for me there.

I have a 353 fastech that had 540 lingenfelter engines and ran 90 mph max I just pulled the engines, installed Brad Smith 555's with 3.3litre whipples they made 830 ish hp im going with scx drives 1.34 ratio and a 34 pitch prop hoping for 100+ mph it handled fine at 90 so I don't see why 100+ would be a problem !

Have a friend in Sweden who has a 353 with Mercury 700 s dose over 90 how much more I do not know :-)

Right here Jake...been in a bubble since the blizzard...freakin sub-contractor issues, buying new trucks, billing...blahblahblah.... ANYWAYS, our 353 is 88-92MPH with 600ish HP per side, XR drives, Imco boxes and shorties...run both 4 and 5 blade tuned props...boat is stable. Wife happy at 85+MPH... Firm believer....".KISS" (keep it simple stupid) or pay big and be possibly miserable. Previous owner (AXAPOWELL) of my boat spent years of R&D getting this boat to where she is. We are doing a bunch of changes this winter but I assure you that we are not fooling with power or drives or props...if it ain't broke..... How fast do you have to go...

Cheers,

Chris :ernaehrung004:

I don't agree with the last comment. Our fastech fell apart in the rough. Knew a couple others who cracked stringers. Formula makes a nice boat but they aren't bullet proof.

Every boat has a limit. Kinda vague here with "cracked stringers". Are you saying that the fiberglass "grid" broke?

Base of the stringer delaminated from the hull. Our 292 helm was seperating from the side of the hull. Not to mention our windshield was falling off near the rear bulk head.

Holy cow! Was it run real hard? I never heard of other 'birds with problems like that... :( Not saying it isn't so, just not real common.
