Formla 242 ss prop question

Considering a 25 Mirage or 25 Mirage Plus, what are the handling and performance diffs? How would each help/hinder the boats characteristics? 1987 242SS Formula.
Thank you

Gary you should be in the right range i do like a four blade. its just a little trail and error. I did get your message ill give ya a shout, you must be getting close.

How much power?

Mr Maine 05-11-2016 08:24 PM

We did back to back testing with a 25 mirage vs a 25 mirage + on a 242ls. The plus was better and faster. The non plus couldn't lift the bow enough. That being said he was 2 mph slower with the 25+ over a 23+ running 68 and 70 respectively. With 500 horsepower it liked the 23.

GLENAMY 242SS 05-11-2016 09:14 PM

Mr Main, good info. What RPM was the boat running? My HP should be at the 500 level camed for about 5400-5600 rpm. When you say not enough bow lift what would be the symptoms? Any idea on the slip #'s? Sorry for all the questions. I now have a 21 Mirage/23 Mirage/27 Mirage + . I am looking to trade the 27 as it is most likely too much and trying to get close, would also consider trading the 21 as it better be too small.. Any help or experience is welcome.
Mark, I hear you with the trial and error, trying to get things ready for later this summer splash. Talk with you soon.
Thanks again.

I don't have the exact numbers but I want to say 5400 with 23+, 4900 with 25+ and 5000 with the 25. The 25s were a little too much but we're doable. The extra cup of the + lifted the bow better getting the hull out.

Turning a 25+ to 5600 would be close to 80 or so you probably need a 23+. His boat did 58 with a 365mag and 21+.

GLENAMY 242SS 05-12-2016 09:18 AM

I am aiming to prop limit the revs to about 5200. That is a sweet video I have seen it several times.
My other question is the SS vs LS from what I have read the SS has more weight forward and what effect that may have.

Mr Maine 05-12-2016 03:49 PM

Yeah the ss is a bit slower due to more bow weight. The more cup of a mirage + should help with that.

Bravo 1 four blade 22p is perfect for your set up. Great holeshot, grip through turns, boat tracks straight,I am selling my Mirage plus 23p because the four blade is so much better. I turn 5200 wide open with my 490hp 502. i dont have Gps but im running right with a 70 mph jet ski that my buddy has. not sure how accurate those speedos are either. We ski, tube, and wakeboard behind the boat now.

GLENAMY 242SS 05-13-2016 08:48 AM

ph1971, PM me with your best price on the Mirage 23+ please. What boat do you have? Thank you.

ph1971 05-13-2016 12:08 PM

PM sent

GLENAMY 242SS 05-13-2016 12:45 PM

What speed / RPM and how did it handle with the 23+.I currently have a 23 standard.

ph1971 05-13-2016 01:45 PM

It also spun 5200 aprox 70 mph in chop. if you just want top speed the mirage plus will bring it.It likes to break free with a load of people or when cornering and I could never get on plane like the Bravo1 does. ON a cold day it would spin up over 5400 but my speedo only reads 65 so... I would love to sell you my prop but the four blade makes that 242 a different boat.

GLENAMY 242SS 05-13-2016 02:41 PM

Really great info, thank you. MASI242 also likes his 4 blade. In my collection of props I have a Boat City 22" 5 blade. I wonder what that would do?

ph1971 05-13-2016 02:52 PM

Please post your findings when you test it. I'm not familiar with that prop.

GLENAMY 242SS 05-15-2016 10:53 AM

ph1971, I wonder what a 24p Bravo 1 would do.

I had a 1988 242 SS and the 23 mirage plus was stock on the 7.4 330 bravo 1.5 setup. that prop was a dog out of the hole, but good top speed. I tried a Turning point 4 blade and was very happy. The 4 blade got the back of the boat UP on plane real quik and stayed on plane at a lower speed great for tubing, I did drop the pitch to 21 on the four blade. I added 100 hp and the the 3 blade and the four blade performed the same just both had more speed (5mph) and rpm. I sold boat 2 months ago

TomZ 05-16-2016 08:19 AM

I'm running a 26P Bravo, and it completely changed the boat. I don't have any top-end figures yet because we're chasing some changes since the blower was rebuilt, but soon for sure! For now this prop is a winner. She gets on plane with no effort (and I mean NO effort at all... we all know these things are pigs to get on plane), and cruises at 50 mph in the mid-3K range.

I also have a BBlades lab'd 28P Bravo to try, but it may be too much even with 600+ HP.

GLENAMY 242SS 05-16-2016 09:31 AM

From all of the great input I am sold on the Bravo 1 4 blade! Now I need to make a decision on pitch. I have no benchmark data for the selection, new engine 500 hp +/-, new drive - alpha to bravo swap, 1.5 ratio. Looking for mid range and up cruse, and not a struggle to plane.
I am trying to target 5200-5400 rpm range.
Would the 24p Bravo be too much? I know it is a guessing game at this point but I would really like to be close on the first try.

TomZ 05-16-2016 09:44 AM

I think it's a good starting point.

ph1971 05-16-2016 06:42 PM

If you can get a 22 for a test run I think you will be stoked.I'm running your exact same set up and I couldnt be happier, unless I had TomZ's mill under the hatch that is:cool-smiley-011:
