Nice project. I'd like to do a restoration like that (some day . . .)

If the engine compartment bulkhead is rotted, then it is a good assumption that the damage extends into the stringers, both going forward along the tank and aft toward the transom. I had a similar thing with my 242 that I caught in time to do a reasonable fix. the fuel tank is probably sitting in wet foam and may have some corrosion underway.

you could separate the 'halves' ( hull and deck/cockpit) of the boat in order to get full access to the stringer grid. It is a bear of a job, but probably the best way to re-do the stringers, if there is a lot of damage. If you did that, you could do a lot to stiffen up the boat. You mentioned using synthetic materials for the structure, which is a good idea IMO. You could make the boat stronger and lighter.

Check out the other foam-based structural materials, like divinycell and nida core.

I can share what I learned in fixing the structure on my 2 Formula's.

Looking forward to your updates.

Our plan is to split the hull, Like I said above, it is getting done right, I figure even if a guy were to say, stick 50k in a boat like this, you're still way ahead of the game, especially with the new 292 fast tech's being 180k+. The foam will come out of the boat for sure and I have yet to decide to put it back in. I will check out the divinycell and the nida core.

I rebuilt my bolsters a few years ago they were wet but i was able to trace and make new pieces. If the foam is good just find a good upholstery shop, this a big project i hope it all goes well.

If I had patterns it wouldn't be so hard, I have an upholstery shop that is going to do the seats, just need to figure it all out from scratch.

Look up Chad Wienhold Sr. on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php...785581&fref=ts. He can do the stickers. As for the bolsters, you're going to have to find a talented shop who can reproduce them. McLeod is no more.

My 292 was in similar shape to yours when I first got it. If you have any questions on anything let me know. If your rub rails are bad, I got exact replacements from iboat. McLeod is gone, but it doesn't matter because they didn't make skins for the SR-1 boats. When looking for a shop to replace the interior, I would ask to see actual work and guarantee that the work done will be perfect. I can't tell you how many boats I see with replaced interiors that look terrible. Seams not straight, puckering on corners, colors combos just plain terrible. Pay and have it done right, like another poster said, XT does excellent work. At some point I'm going to have them design a new sun pad for my boat.

The 292 is a great boat. Keep us posted on the progress.

Ya the rub rail is cracked about every 6 feet or so, it will have to be replaced, I had a upholstery shop we have used for years here do my truck when I restored it and it turned out real good but I may call XT because of their work that I have seen, bad thing is he is a ways from me and shipping things would get pretty costly I am betting and who knows what it would look like after the shipping company threw it around a few times LOL.

did you do any stringer or bulkhead replacements? if so did you split the deck from the hull? I am up for tackling anything but getting a heads up on what to do or not to do is a big help. So far since we brought it home, it is about 75% gutted and the whole boat inside and out has been cleaned with a 50/50/30 mix of bleach, water and comit to get rid of all the mold everywhere, just doing that made it look better. putting a list together on what will be getting replaced, pretty much anything that was electrical will be replaced, fresh water pump, gauges, waste pump, bilge pump etc etc. A long list LOL.

I didn't have any rot issues with my boat. It was dirty and needed some upholstery work and was missing the rub rail, but that was about it. Mine only had 200 +/- original hours on it.
