Wow....the speed increase is huge for just taking the arrestors off. The TB has a 3.5" dia OD on it. I looked around for another FA, and could only find a K&N which looks decent. Can you share what you put on yours? Is the TB the same size? I am not in love with the beauty cover....it can disappear if it means better performance. Thanks for the idea.

Which K&N are you looking at? I have been looking for a while and can't find one to fit the throttle body.

Well, I looked all around and even called the eBay seller that sold the ones that COOP had. They are all gone. I then called the OEM, in Michigan and left a message. I would hope that they could make one for me. Even if it would cost a few bucks....I think it would be worth it. If they can make something, even if needs some adaptation, it would be worth it in the pursuit to get a better breathing, cooler running induction system.

Is this the one that would fit?

Mallory Marine is long gone. What isleft in businesses inventory, if any, is what is left.
I believe Seirra bought out Mallory Marine, not sure, I'll check into that in a few.

Here is the page on Mallory Marine catalog that shows their flame arrestors:

And here is the page (next one immediately proceeding above page) that gives the dimensions, throat size, height, width, etc, of the above:

Okay, Sea Star Solutions whom owns Sierra, bought Mallory Marine.

Revspan - just thought of something.

Do you have mechanical or fly by wire (electronic throttle) throttle bodies on your engine ?

They are different in mounting and thus flame arrestors

Mechanical: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/s...31794/15323/80

Digital : http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/s...31794/15323/85

Wouldn't it be great if something like the 496 flame arrestor would clamp on ? I think the flange on it is like 3.750 as far as i could find.

I have the mechanical. Not sure the difference other than clearance for the throttle, as well as shift linkage(which is right next to the throttle). Just needs to stand up off the TB about 1.5 inches or so. Of course, getting the element away from the TB a little would also be good to make sure you have a better flow of air going into the intake.

Merc has other clamp on flame arrestors too, I'll show them just in case.

As an FYI, I don't know if your engine's throttle body has enough area to clamp something on, but again, ust throwing some stuff out for you to possibly investigate.
