Fuel gauge vs. fuel in the tank?

Ok so boat is still new to me and on about 1/16 fuel gauge reading i try to put in 100gal.
Full to the top at 89gal....!?
My friend has a 2006 382 and the has a simular issue with tank not taking much fuel vs. gauge.
Are these tanks smaller than adveritsed or do we really have 50gal reserves?

1/16 on trailer or in water? Mine reads wildly different on trailer vs in water. On top of that once the needle starts bouncing off full, I tend to start looking for a gas stop.

Papasmurf 08-15-2016 12:30 PM

Thats so funny. I never even paid the fuel gauge much attention until I installed this.....

https://youtu.be/gGZP1ALe6T8 Now it moves as much as the tach does !

As a reference, the sender in my 311 was somewhere around 15.5 inches and the tank is around 19 inches deep. Level on the trailer it could read empty, but have still have quite a bit of fuel. Definitely not 50 gallons though.

1/16 in the water at rest.

My fastech is empty when the gauge shows quarter tank . Found out the hard way and never let it go below half . Jeff wurl

my new to me 312 fastech im still learning as well. i know i went on a 70 mile poker run and ran her pretty hard with a full tank. came back showed still above half. was very shocked. went back out yesterday with it showing between 1/2 and 3/4 made it about a mile dropped to 1/4 yellow light came on, got to the island knowing i had a fuel dock nearby if needed. fuel gauge showing back up above 1/2. decided to play it safe and put $100 in for the ride home. fuel gauge now reading full again. not sure what to think at this point.

badmonkey 08-15-2016 06:13 PM

lol...Yes mine does the same....Like Jeff, as soon as gauge get's to half I put fuel in... Better safe than sorry.

On mine there are two screws to adjust to calibrate the fuel sender. So when it is full of fuel I adjusted so it would read full on guage and then when nearly empty I adjusted the - screw so it reads Empty. If that doesn't work keep track how far you ran and figure you got 1mpg for twins and normally when you go to fill up again you will be within 10 gallons of how many miles you think you ran.

aquaforce 08-16-2016 12:41 AM

Once while trying to get rid of old gas and run it low, I ran out. The gauge was at 1/8 and the engines shut off about 60 yds from the ramp. That was close. I plan to fix that cause I don't like to show fuel if there is none.

So my 312 reads on E light on with about 40 gallons left in the tank. I put 100 gallons in mine this past weekend and that was all the way full.

312Rick 08-16-2016 03:17 PM

When the gauge on my 312 starts bumping off full (in the water), I have used 90 gallons of my 128 total. I run a GPS and typically get about 1-1/2 mpg if I'm not running hard. I didn't know about the adjustment screws on the sender. Definitely going to take a look at that. It's not uncommon for me to run 100 gallons on a weekend and I don't like it after the needle comes off full. Makes me nervous.

Fast N Loud 08-16-2016 08:32 PM

I recently replaced my sender with a wema model and my fuel gauge when I put the new motor in. I filled the tank, ran a poker run and ended the weekend on 1/2 tank according to gauge. When I topped it off it took 57 gallons...almost half the 106 gallons it holds. ( I think I'm pretty close )

Back4More 08-17-2016 09:07 AM

Thats like dead on!
So yesterday i ran it down to where the gauge didnt move of E at rest. Then ran around for about 30 mins more.... I report back on what im able to get in next time out.

Pave 08-17-2016 09:28 AM

Hmm...I don't actually even know how big is my tank? When the light had been burning for a little time I put for about 66 gallons in.

That's very interesting, seems like there's two distinct groups, those that can run well below E, and those that can't go anywhere close! E for me is definitely empty, and 10 gallons
will bring it just below 1/4. Once I learned that lesson the hard way, 1/2 became the new E. Having said that, I never have completely filled it, but if I put 60 gallons in when it says 1/2, it will be buried on Full for quite a while.

Fast N Loud 08-17-2016 11:29 AM

105 gallons according to the 271 Fastech owners manual...send me your email & I will send it to you.

From the Helm 08-17-2016 01:56 PM

So on my 370SS I've been trying to decide if it's full when it says full or empty when it says empty. Having added 170 gallons when it was on 1/8th tank I can assume there was 50 gallons left in tank OR I was nearly empty and the gauge is wrong when it says Full. My choice is make a spill when it spits out the vent or run it til it quits, probably never going to know.

The gauge starts to move off F right away when I run it.
So today I filled it to the top where it was about to over flow.
106 gallons went in.

Back4More 08-18-2016 01:14 AM

According to Formula's web page. 154gal fuel capacity.
So on mine it's a 50gal reserve.
I bet I'll still run out of gas one day thinking another 50gal should be in there...

Fast N Loud 08-18-2016 08:49 AM

According to Formulas owners manual...

Fastech 271 - 105 gallons
292 - 113 gallons
353 - 154 gallons
382 - 195 gallons

Fast, I think that the last year Formula made the 312 was 2003. Probably why it's not listed in your manual.

offthefront 08-27-2016 05:46 AM

I use the 1mpg rule .. reset the gps each time out and if I put 75 gal in I know it's time for fuel @ 75 miles ...m

aquaforce 08-28-2016 09:11 PM

419 = 235 gal

These have not been made since 2002 but that is what my info says for tank size.
