I'm "Old School" and remember OB's as smokey 2 cycle stink pots that left a rainbow trail in the water around marinas and ramps. As technology has progressed things have changed dramatically. While I was at the show I stopped in at the Intrepid Boats display and this caught my eye:
...a 47' Intrepid Sport Fish with 4: 627 Horsepower "7" Outboards !! A "7" is basically a 6.2 GM LSA V8 mounted to a special ZF right angle drive and gear box. This particular boat weighs in at almost 15 Tons and cruises at 60 with a Top Speed of 82 !! NOW they have MY attention !! |

Someone should tune up the lower on a 7 and try it on a cat.

This was discussed on another recent thread. They really are not designed for high speed, and are more geared and marketed toward the big CC/fishing market.

I could whip up a lot of cookies with all those eggbeaters. Then I would eat cookies on my I/O boat.
Just don't see how $1M price tag goes with the aesthetics of O/B. |
We wouldn't build 'em if people weren't screaming for them, but not everyone is expected to love outboards either. So there's that.

Uhhhh well now that you mention the peoples interest....... how many times does Formula have to say "NO" to inquiries for the triples before they build them again. Oh I know the "not a big seller" argument but the eye candy, WOW factor and Formula performance peers and history are all connected to them big time. Formula should build up the "grid" for reversed triples and keep up with their peers, Cigarette and Donzi and hold market. Stepping away from roots is not a good practice in many things. So it is what it is. |
