Formula Tough!! IRMA vs 400SS

Well I'm just getting all the info on Miss Kimberly. The 400SS is sitting outside on a work rack in Marathon Fl. The wind was recorded at 160 in Key Colony beach until the wind speed indicator blew off the side of the building. We had a 4' storm surge in the lot where its on a rack. Amazingly we did not float. There were boats pushed up into the lot laying on their sides. We stayed put. The plugs were out so I think the engine room flooded some. We still have dead batteries probably because of bilge pump? I'm in San Diego so I am doing this by remote control. I keep the plug in the pipe between the cabin and the engine compartment. The amazing thing is that the cabin is COMPLETELY DRY! Whew No Mold!!
The damage is I see it now is the entire eisenglass top blew off and shredded. Had I been there or known about hurricane prep I would have unzipped everything. Hindsight is perfect Huh? The engine room probably has some water damage. Water in starters, inside drive bellows ect. I am bringing the boat back to San Diego asap. I will deal with State Farm claims here. I probably will pull the engines and send them to my Local Volvo Guy, Maby upgrade to D-6 400's w/latest drives.
I am having a new aluminum Manning gooseneck trailer built. Matt gave my a good price with a 4 week delivery. I need to get the new trailer to Marathon?
When I sold my 382 "Fossil Fuel" I also sold my F-350.......Now I'm shopping for a tow rig also....SHEEZE. With a gooseneck the F-350 tows up to #30k. I will be about #20K on the trailer. Should handle it OK. I don't want to go Sportchassis. Thoughts? I do need to get outta Marathon soon. I have contacted commercial haulers and it seems San Diego is a black hole on return hauls so the prices are nuts. I can pay for my new trailer with the cost of a commercial haul.. More news later.......

I guess the good news is your boat is still there and the damage could be worse, dam thats a long haul back to Cali. Good luck with every thing.

Some day, I'll exchange my 382 for a 400SS. Found a KILLER deal on a low-hour 2009 with all the bells and whistles, but the time isn't right yet. GLAD to see that you came through better than expected. Keep us posted on your upgrade efforts.

If it was a pod boat you may be better off. Big problems with first few edtions of volvo pods. Outdrives are tough.

400SS's are sterndrive only; no pods. There have been various generations of the DP-H drive as power progressed from 330 to 400 hp, but I can find no real stories of widespread problems with the outdrives. Those D6 diesels make huge torque.

Mine have been almost perfect. I had a leak in one side, fixed easily. The lowers come apart with two bolts.....amazing engineering. Mine are the older a's. Ive run 525 400SS's, The D-6 jump on plane faster than the Gas bravo 3's. My only slight issue is the earlier (mine) electric shift takes some getting used to. With the Big Duo Prop when it shifts it moves....now. The slight delay when docking is exciting to say the least.
