Who's trailering SunSports
Anyone else trailering SunSports?
I trailer a 280SS on a dual axle aluminum load-rite with an F250 powerstroke with no problem. Anyone gotten questioned by the law on the width? How far do you trailer? |
Why? how wide are those puppies?
|
280ss is 9'3" and the 330SS is 10'2"
|
  9'3" YOW . I didn't realize they were that wide:rolleyes: I was thinking , like 8'6" or maybe a little more. I have a car carrier that's 8'9" and never had a problem and I've been from Jersey to Conn. Fla,Texas,Mo , Wi , and through damn near every state east of the Mississippi. But that's not 9'3" either:rolleyes:
|
At 9'3" I think you'll be over the legal limt for towing without special permits. I believe the limit is 8'5".
I'll have to look into it. |

I bought a new 02' 330 Sun Sport this year with a NEXTRAIL aluminum tri-axle trailer. I purchased in Ohio and live in the Detroit,Michigan area. The boat is primarily in the rack for the season. I did some trailering this summer including to and from Ohio twice and once up North in Michigan to
Lake Charlevoix. This is what I know..... -The boat is definitely over the legal limit for width!!!! -A permit is req'd and will limit your towing hours of the day. -The trailer width is the same as rigs with 8' beams. -The boat sits wider but more over the top of the fenders. -It appears the same as other rigs from the side. -A ticket may be a bit more than the cost of the permit??? Therefore..... -I took my chances and was passed by many lawman and never got stopped!! XO |

I also follow the philosophy, the ticket is more than a permit and hope the police have better things to worry about.
Your boat looks great. Must be nice to have those 496's and hitting 60Mph. My buddies get pretty comfortable in the big cockpit so when we hit the bigger water I say "FINISH YOUR DRINK AND HOLD ON" Is that a diesel in the truck? Here's a picture of mine on the trailer, of course I don't trailer with the canvas up that's just the picture I have available. |
Familyman,
Your boat looks great as well!!! The 496's have been great!! I can comfortably cruise at 53/54 or so and not be wide open. The truck is a 01' GMC 1500 4wd Yukon XL. It is not diesel but is a 5.3liter gasoline engine. This is not the truck for full time trailering of this boat.....but for the few times I will use it in a season it was perfectly fine!! I'm sure your F250 does great!!!!! |
Has anyone figured out how to put straps on the transom?
The lift hooks on the transom are obstructed by the trim tabs and I haven't found a way to use straps. Has anyone else? |
When I picked-up my 280SS, the dealer put the straps around the trim tabs. The boat with twins weigh so much that I doubt the straps will have a lot of pressure on them for cornering, etc. So I figure your're not hurting the tabs any.
By the way, I have a triple axle aluminum trailer that floats! Because of having six tires, I had to buy (2) 25 lb. dumbells and strap them to the back of the trialer so it sinks. I know this information won't help you, but I trailer the boat two miles (one way) with a '98 Explorer Sport. Yes I know its probably 11,000 lbs. being pulled by a vehicle that has a 4,500 lb. capacity, but I spent all my money on the boat. I put it in transfer case low and the SUV doesn't really complain. Needless to say I get quite a few stares at the ramp. |
That boat must look HUGE compared to your Explorer!!
Do you have a picture of the straps on the boat.? Better yet do you have a picture of the boat on the tri-axle behind the Explorer? By the way I making my last run on the season tomorrow I've got everything off the boat, you know all that cramp the kids and wife need. I've got the GPS ready I'm goin' see what she will do. 2001 280SS T-260HP w/ B3, I'll let you know tomorrow what the GPS reads. What HP do you have? |
i have mine hooked to the transom tow hook's to the trailer
not a problem. familyman your boat sit's on the trailer real sweet the dealer set mine up (in a hurry i might ad) it kind of sits bow low so this winter iam going to make it fit right iam towing it with a 1996 tahoe. was at the ford dealer looking a a new f-250 with a deisel |
My friend owns a local dealership and thinks my bow is too low. He keeps telling me to get in so we can adjust the trailer. It's such a big boat it's difficult keeping the bow high. But make the adjustment. If not water will leak into the cabin. Mine has.

No picture of the straps. I don't use them anyway.
I don't have a picture of my Explorer, but here is one of my previous 'tow' vehicle. I've got the same engine/drives you do (the biggest at the time). I estimate somewhere around 56-57 mph. I hope to get down to the boat in the next couple of weeks. I will try and get a picture of how the straps were when I purchased three years ago. Hope your last run was good. |
56mph was max. That's with over 1/2 tank of full. Someone mentioned lab finished props and I'm probably going to get thru exhaust put on next spring.
We'll see what I get then. |
