Is it normal to have all this done over the winter?? What should and should not be done? The engines have right at 200 hours on them. And are these prices in the ballpark? Thanks in advance.

Seems high.
All easy stuff to maintain, couple hundred bucks at the most if you do it. |
these are typical marine shop rates, full price Merc parts.
pulling drives and basic maint is a yearly thing, I'd get a service manual and learn to do it yourself - you'll save thousands yearly compared to these prices. you can get new pumps for the price of labor you are quoted in 5 &6 - or get a $60 kit for each. Cap/rotors are $60 ea, Wires $100 per set or less. 3 Jugs of Mobil 1 15W50 at Walmart and filters are $100 total otherwise you are close to Tyler Crockett's shop, he's awesome to work with as well. Call Michigan Motorz, they are the best in our area for parts only pricing. Both Tyler and MM have hooked me up. |
Ok, so pulling the drives needs to be done every year. I could probably do that myself. oil changes are easy enough.
Not sure why he said I need cap/rotors, wires and plugs. The engines didn't miss at all last fall. I've only got 200 hrs on the engines. Do I need to replace the pumps? Is that a yearly thing? I have the mercury maintenance manuals and plan to read them. I'm thinking I should skip this work and get it done myself in the spring. I'm just wondering what's really required on an annual basis. This is my first boat in a lot of years. I've had outboards in the past. Thanks for the replies/ |

This is my first boat in a lot of years. I've had outboards in the past. Thanks for the replies/ cap gets crusty inside, can change if you want as they are not very expensive. Wires are not necessary in my opinion, but the way a marine engines runs at higher RPM its not a bad thing to change them. Cap / Rotor are not not yearly changes, just as needed. Drives get yearly service, you can get a nice alignement bar for $30 on ebay. That is what you want to check yearly. Couple bucks for seal kit and oil and done. 1-2 hrs per side, if you have tie bars and goodies hanging off the drives. Pump impellers are rubber, lots of people change them yearly, I do it bi-yearly. No idea why they are charging 6 hrs labor for each pump. I have 502's, pump is a litle different but less tan 1 hr to change impellers and ~$65 for the maint kit. There are a bit of a pain to get to, as they are low on the engine on a 502, but not hard work by any means. If you worked on outboards, i/o's are really no more tricky. |

The prices seem to be very high- I've had my impeller changed a couple of times - at a marina, and it wasn't close to that price. I agree that the cap, wire and rotor are not a yearly thing- I changed my cap and rotor after about 300 hours and the amount of rust and corrosion inside the cap was pretty bad- yet my 7.4 mpi ran just perfect prior to changing - again this is something that even I could do. I changed plugs which was relatively easy- just some of them hard to get at. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch so take my comments for what they are worth.- Oh our boat is 100% fresh water
