Default 330ss repowered 383 Stroker

Hello ..... I am in the market for a used Formula 330/370 SS and finding a lot of 383 Stroker repowers instead of the 496 motors installed. Is there any gains with the 383 in terms of top end, fuel mileage, low end torque, etc. What benefits does the 383 offer over the stock 496? I checked with Mercrisuer today and they recommend sticking with the 496. Just want to get a real world comparison. Thanks.

The reason people are replacing the 496 with the 383 is around cost. The cost to repower with the 496 is almost double the cost of the 383. If you believe the literature that Mercruiser puts out stating that the 383 Mag Bravo puts out more power than a 502, then I have a nice bridge to sell you!

Stick with Mercruiser's guidance... the 496 is the right package for these boats. You will never be happy with the small block's performance, and the 330 needs the continuous torque of the big blocks to help it get up and move.

I talked to Mercruiser the other day and they said the same - stick with the 496. My mechanic said the same and also added the 496 is bullet proof - really good motor.

some of these repowers may have been original 454 mpi motors. 310 hp units. the 383 out performs that motor and is a go to replacement. That being said they wereunderpowered from the start. go 496 minimum

What motors above the 496 could you recommend in either Volvo Penta or Mercruiser? What setup has the highest top end speed/performance for the Formula 330ss? Thanks!

Stick with the 496’s small blocks just won’t cut it in my opinion. A cool upgrade would be the 496 H.O.s 425 hp or 500 efi blue motors. Boat would probably touch 70 with that kind of power. Best I’ve seen out of my 330 with 496’s mags is 62 moderately loaded. I cruise at 35 mph at around 3000 rpm depending on the water conditions. Great boat In my opinion coming from numerous go fast boats.
