What type of replacement fuel tank sender for 1990 242ss
 
Hi everyone. Engine is back in the boat. Hopefully starting it tomorrow. Last year I noticed my fuel gauge was not accurate so I want to replace my sending unit. I was going to order a replacement Moeller unit but I started researching and have read that with the stock VDO gauges they use a different ohm range and wanted to double check with someone that has replaced there’s with factory gauge and what they used? Thanks in advance

Thank you for the reply. I found a VDO replacement that is the same length so I just ordered it. 11” long 0-90 ohm. VDO 224-228 is the part number in case someone else needs one. Tank was 11 1/2” deep and the sender was 11” from mounting flange to bottom of sender.

Hopefully all of my other switches and senders will work with my gauges because I replaced them all. Water temp and oil pressure

While you are doing that I would replace the fuel pick-up tube. Another member here just replaced his and found two other broken tubes in the tank. Perhaps Roscoe will chine in and offer the part number of his replacement.

I don’t have the part no. handy but the company is called Filler Neck Supply. The pick up tube they sell is trimmable nylon with an aluminum fitting. 3/8 npt to 3/8 npt male. This company sends you an email every time a mail handler touches the shipment. I couldn’t believe how much attention they paid to a $20 part. Anyway, when I pulled my tank sender to look for the old pick up, I found two tubes rolling around in there. One was copper and one was steal. Both had been sweated to the fitting they were attached to. To answer your first question, I bought and have been very pleased with a sender that Hardin marine sells. There is no float involved so it doesn’t bounce and it is much more reliable than the lyin’ piece of sh!t that I had prior. Don’t ask me how it works. Jeff at Hardin explained it to me but I just blinked blankly and nodded. Glad to here you’re getting close. Good luck

Thank you for the great info. I’m going to look into both of those parts. The sender I ordered is on back order. Fired up the boat 2 days ago and it’s running great. Should be in the water this weekend. I’ll post some pics and a video once I get everything cleaned up

So we’ve been out a couple times for trial runs. Been towed in twice. Oil leak twice. Yesterday ran fine for about 3 hours. Did about 20 miles and another oil leak surfaced. Made it back to the mouth of the river and got towed in from there. Took 2.5 hours for tow boat to arrive and got cooked in the sun. Was really hot out but still had fun. Just have to keep plugging away and get all the bugs fixed.
