ISO plug/play, self-contained, GPS speedo

I (believe I) would like to replace my analog dash mounted speedometer with a modern GPS dial speedometer. I'd ideally like it to be a self contained kit such that I just stick it in the dash, hook up some power and it's off and running. 0-100 mph should do it.
Anyone have a good vendor? Part #? First hand experiance with doing this (positives and negatives)?
Thanks,
Tom

No responses, am I off base is this not doable?

ph1971 07-29-2019 06:15 PM

I have been very pleased with the auto meter marine speedo. It has an external antenna, so not self contained. It has a small digital display that includes gps coordinates, compass heading, odometer, hourmeter, top speed, trip meter, and more that I’m forgetting. Hope this helps.

Faria Chesapeake model SGP010 (80 mph model), in white or black (60 and 80 mph - had a 120, but doesn't look like it's still available). May have to call to see if 120 is available. Drop in and go, receiver is internal. Has a analog style sweep arm. Gives course over ground and actual heading (compass over ground).

2 great answers. I think that if the Auto meter comes with its own antenna that's close enough to self contained if either of you could send me links to exactly what you're talkin about that would be cool

shunter2005 07-29-2019 06:30 PM

Here's the 80 mph speedo. This link is just for the pic and info. You can probably find one cheaper if you look hard enough

Those Autometer speedos are pretty nice looking also.

ph1971 07-29-2019 07:25 PM

Don’t have a link but I believe the auto meter part number for the gauge I have is 200646-33.

I use a Livorsi 80 MPH GPS speedo that receives the GPS signal from my Lowrance chart plotter. The external antenna always had problems.

My boat came with a Lowrance Elite 4. I do not know its capabilities yet...any idea if this has the capability/output to run the Livorsi 80 MPH GPS?
It looks like that is a $300+ piece.

TomZ 07-30-2019 10:59 PM

Tom, my Lowrance unit is a Elite 5 to, but believe your Elite 4 has a NMEA cable coming off of it (just as mine does). If I remember correctly, the yellow com wire was used to connect to the input of the speedo. Any speedo with an external antenna should be able to communicate with it so do not fee like you must run a Livorsi (my 311 already had Livorsi gauges).

You will need to tell the Lowrance to send NMEA 0183 sentences. I turned all of mine on and it worked.

Some helpful reading:

continuousWave: Whaler: Reference: Universal NMEA-0183 Interface

Thanks, I like the livorsi I did not realize how high in quality they must be :-) we are on Perdido Key trying to finalize the new Boathouse and lift so I can bring my baby down

TomZ 07-31-2019 07:56 AM

I like Livorsi, but I think there are some better alternatives; I've always been a big fan of Autometer. Livorsi and Gaffrig can be a bit pricey for what you can get with Autometer, and in most cases they appear to be the same pieces (or close to).

F14A water jet 07-31-2019 07:59 AM

I have been using Auto Meter for car gauges and have never been disappointed. Thanks for the information

F14A water jet 08-05-2019 08:35 PM

So, are our speedometers: 4" - Hole size: 3.375" (85mm)

TomZ 08-05-2019 09:58 PM

Yep, 3-3/8. Pretty standard.

Okay, I was an engineer (mechanical) and I should know electrical (as I had to take it twice)...
I have a pdf of the operations manual but it does not show plugs/schematic.
I guess I will just buy a speedometer I want and figure out how to attach it...once I see the connections.
Thanks Tom,
Tom
Ps-immediately after I wrote the above, I found Elite 4 installation instructions and it all makes a lot more sense now.

Is there a page/menu on your Elite 5 that give a GPS speed readout on the screen?

Padraig 08-11-2019 11:15 AM

If you have a GPS, IMO, you don't need a GPS speedometer as you have speed readouts on the GPS. Leave the gauge you have or better yet take it out and replace it with a gauge you don't have such as water pressure or oil temperature.

Point taken...Thanks!

The Livorsi GPS speedo had $2 coin battery soldered into the external hockey-puck type antenna. They wanted $75 (+shipping?) to install a new battery every couple years. Instead, I took a piece of wire and went from my GPS data output, to the gauge data input. Depending on your marine VHF radio model, you can also use the same GPS data feed to send location data to your radio as well.

Very cool...how did you attached the wire (solder, clip, or some sort of plug)?

Keith 08-12-2019 07:26 AM

The connection will be exposed to all sorts of extreme temps and weather conditions. It really depends on what you're most comfortable with and how much work you want to do. You don't want water or moisture getting into the splice. The data wires from both devices were very thin so you could use a little dab of di-electric grease on each exposed wire to prevent corrosion before crimping. Use a piece of heat shrink tubing around the connection.

There are really nice weather resistant connectors available like weather pack, molex and others. The advantage to a weather resistant connector is you can take unplug later without having to cut wires.

Tom, yes it has a screen that provides GPS speed along with course direction and waypoint guidance.

The newer speedometers have an external antenna. My antenna was powered by a 12V source, but didn’t seem to work well. The connection from the chart plotter fixed that.

Cool!
Did you se the phone message?

Turns out my speedometer face is 4" in diameter and overall 4.5"...what size do I need? The 85mm was too small :-(https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7c8f60e30f.jpg

How does this mount in the 3 13/16 mounting hole in the mounting plate on the dash (1988 F311)? The description says "Gauge size: 4" (3 3/8)" but I already tried an 85-87 mm gauge (which my math said would be right at 3 3/8") and it was too small for the opening.
Additionally, did it come with an antenna/speed sensor?
Thanks!

That part # description says 5"...see above post (about the size opening I have), does this fit without modifications?
Thanks!

F14A water jet 08-27-2019 11:49 AM

Please forgive me...I have been focused on the trim plate and not on the actual hole in the dash. As you can see in the attached picture, the 3 3/8" (85mm) gauge fits the hole (but not the trim plate. Therefore, for very little money I can have a GPS speedometer...until I decide that I want to pay 5x more for a bigger one, or switch out the tachs (or all the gauges).
Thanks for putting up with me!

I am very pleased with the results (added some trim and the original square fascia). I'm still going to probably refine the "filler" (to fill the gap)...but its fine for right now, and the GPS picked up satellites well!https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f0d795dcd8.jpg

beaver 3 08-27-2019 06:07 PM

Km/h ???

F14A water jet 08-27-2019 06:52 PM

I ordered 80 mph and just assumed it was miles over kilometers but I guess I misread it. Oh well, re-ordering! :-(
Thank you...I probably would not have noticed and probably would have thought I had a 100 mph boat when I buried the speedometer at 2/3 throttle.
