Default 353 weight

Our 353 on a triple axle trailer had a tongue weight of 1400 lbs. and axle weight of 11,500 lbs. over the triple axles. Our first tow vehicle was a 6.0 Diesel Excursion. We moved over to a 6.7 Diesel F350 SWD. Both power units had plenty of towing and stopping power. I had to use a weight distributing hitch on the Excursion. I obtained these weights on a certified platform scale.

I have this truck and feel pretty maxed out with a single engine 272 Baja. It’s a bit squishy and screaming all the time. Airbags helped a lot though.

I don't know my 6.0 or was it a 6.2 in my 2000 GMC three quarter ton cab and a half pickup. I pulled a lot of 14800 lb trailers with that and it just did not have the power. It had a 373 rear end but it didn't make the high horsepower until it was screaming at 4700 RPMs. Big blocks made better torque at lower RPMs that's what I liked about them, they were luggers.

I was just trying to open up a budget friendly possibility for the man. Cheap tow rig while being able to also have his nice new daily driver.

I I have a 2011 GMC 3/4 ton pickup with a Duramax in it. It was a huge improvement from my 2002 3/4 ton GMC with the 6.0. Not only performance-wise but towing wise. The new body style with the new frame with bigger brakes does much much better pulling, and stopping with heavy loads then older body styles. The new body style trucks don't get pushed around like the old ones too major major difference between new style and older style frames.

A 1/2 ton for the 353 will only be adequate for around town, not on the highway. I had a Tundra when we purchased our 353. My Tundra had load E tires and I added timbrens, then added a leaf, but nothing made it feel comfortable at highway speeds. I ended up buying a 2017 GMC 2500 HD and it's like night and day. No more white knuckles. I have the 6.0 and it has enough power, but need to put the pedal all the way down on steep highway hills which is fine with me. We have a steel trailer. A lighter aluminum trailer would also improve towing.
