Default 370 Supersport - question about lift out section in galley countertop

I recently purchased a 2002 370SS. Loving it. The Galley has a lift out section in the countertop that just opens to the shelf/cabinet below. There are some kind of guides inside the cabinet for some kind of slide in component. I"m missing something but I don't know what is supposed to be there. The lift out is essentially useless as is unless you are trying to get to something deep on the shelf by going through the top rather than the front.

It would seem that this feature would maybe be for a trash bin of some kind. What am I missing?

My 400ss has a trash can that drops in there. Likely yours is missing.

This makes sense except it wasn't obvious until I went back last night and looked at the situation more carefully. The previous owner added a shelf inside this cabinet which completely blocks the ability of a trash can to slide into the sliders. I have to say the shelf is more useful than a full 20-30 qt trashcan. I think I may just get a small plastic container that can sit under the lift out on the new shelf to use as a small trash can for little stuff.

Thank for the response.
